Does ScHoolboy Q’s “Hell Of A Night” Have The Ability To Break Into The Mainstream? (Listen)

I have to say that the first 45 seconds of ScHoolboy Q's "Hell Of A Night" frightened the hell out of me. It sounded like Q was about to drop his first ever electro-trance-dance-trap record and that's about as frightening as Freddy Krueger chillin' at the foot of your bed at two in the morning. Thankfully, the record does become way more TDE and less MC Hammer meets Psy after that brief intro.

With the release of "Hell Of A Night" there's been a lot of social media chatter about the mainstream appeal of the DJ Dahl-produced song. We all know that with the exception of Kendrick, the fella's of TDE have yet to break into the mainstream world. But could that change with the release of ScHoolboy Q's latest track? And for the record, I think we've all come to the conclusion that the word "mainstream" merely refers to an artist being popular among a variety of different people. So, with that being said, I'm on the fence with this one.

Don't get me wrong, the song is dope, but aside from that intro "Hell Of A Night" sounds like your average ScHoolboy Q song. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but that doesn't make for a song with broad appeal. And honestly, unless I'm missing something, I don't even see where a mainstream debate is warranted for this song.
