With The Release Of “Beautiful (Remix)” Mariah Carey Needs To Retire All Rapper Guest Verses Posted by Danielle Harling on 06/27/13 | Filed under ASAP Rocky, Miguel, Mariah Carey

As dope of a jam as "Fantasy" may have been and as fitting as Mase and The Lox were on "Honey (Remix)", it's about time Mariah Carey left the guest appearances from rappers alone. That formula has long expired. The famed songstress recently recruited Rick Ross and Meek Mill for the heavily mediocre "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" and now Mariah has enlisted Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky for a remixed version of "Beautiful." Needless to say, the guest verse from Rocky doesn't fit the song at all. Pair his unfitting verse with random adlibs, scattered throughout the song, and the remix becomes borderline terrible.

What I enjoyed most about the original "Beautiful" was that, unlike a number of R&B songs, it didn't seem contrived. Both the appearance of Miguel and Mariah made sense on the song and vocally, the duo were an amazing pairing. On top of that the production was kept simple and there weren't any guest verses to bog the song down.

I understand that Mariah Carey and/or her label might be hoping to tap into a younger fan base, but if she keeps recruiting rappers she might just lose the fans she already has. Not sure if the risk of being trendy is really worth it at this point.
