I wanted to do this Your Guide series to help you through all things hip-hop, but really it's just about the different labels or groups of rappers. I can’t help it, that shit fascinates me and since there is no rapper LinkedIn, it can be frustrating to find all the info; so I want to make it easy on you. Today, I got a chance to check out “Trillmatic” from the A$AP Mob and A$AP Nast (featuring Method Man) and was thoroughly impressed. Dope right? Real as shit New York hip-hop...I did however leave the cut wondering just who exactly the A$AP Mob is and using my secret internetz detective skillz I dug up some dirt on Rocky and company.

 

A$AP Rocky

A logical place to begin. He didn’t start the group (credit goes to Yams, Bari and Illz) but he has certainly played a pivotal role in their rise. He really blew up with his "Long.Live.ASAP" album which dropped early this year. For some, the lyrical content might leave something to be desired, but I think he is much better than he gets credit for. The dude can straight up spit, even if what he is saying isn’t always enlightening. In addition to the album, be sue to check out his Live.Love.ASAP tape from 2011; shit still knocks today.

A$AP Ferg

If you don’t know anything about Ferg, just the name of his 2013 album, "Trap Lord", should tell you all you need to know. Even those who don’t really do trap music have had a hard time not digging his high-energy quirky approach (cough cough Nathan cough cough) because he is just so damn fun to listen to. "Trap Lord" was his major label (and solo) debut and with a decent amount of success it looks like he will be back for more in 2014.

A$AP Nast

I really like what I have heard from Nast, but the problem is, he doesn’t have a solo project. I’m sure something is in the works, but as of now, I can’t find a single tape or album from the guy. He has a flow that is like a mixture of Ferg’s and Rocky and I really dig it. He does appear quite often on the Mob’s various freestyles and on songs along side his fellow A$AP-ers (Trilla is fire), but its hard to really get to know him without some solo stuff; love what I have heard though.

A$AP Ant

His raspy, syrupy flow goes really well with the trippy, smoky vibe of the whole crew, but he also plays well with those not in the mob; he often collabs with other young emcees (Flatbush Zombies for example).  I know Rocky had all the attention in February, but Ant dropped a tape too, entitled ASAP, which boasted appearances from Rocky and Raekwon. If Raekwon fucks with you, you must be doing something right.

A$AP Twelvy

Really dig his flow. It might be the most crisp, assertive flow of the whole team; he really commands your attention when on the mic. For how talented he is, I am amazed he isn’t as big. He gets some major bonus points too because he is a big sneaker head. Like Nast, he doesn’t have a lot of solo stuff, but I am dying to hear more; I have dug everything he has done so far.

Da$h

Da$h has a really unique flow—it has a cool throwback vibe to it— and I’m amazed he isn’t more popular. He dropped his "V.I.C.E.S" tape back in June—which boasts production from Larry Fisherman A.K.A Mac Miller—and has also appeared on a cut with Chuck Inglish. So his name is definitely out there and he is slowy and quietly building a solid body of work.

A$AP Illz

As you probably know thanks to Rocky, fashion is pretty important to the A$AP Mob. Though he doesn’t rap, Illz still reps the A$AP Mob and his active role in fashion and designs is helping to make A$AP a brand more so than a group of rappers. He might not be a rapper, but he is one of the founders of the Mob and is just as intregal to their success. In this day in age rappers are almost like brands and Illz helps make the group more multi-facited. Illz seems to work a lot with Stussy  so if you want to feel just like an A$AP-er, better grab some of these clothes.
