A few weeks ago, we tried to put you on to Portugal. The Man and I hope you listened. If you did, hopefully, you copped the group's album "Evil Friends". I finally got a chance to listen and it is awesome, one of my favorite, non hip-hop albums of the year; the Danger Mouse production really gives them a cool edge. If you did what we told you, then you will be all the more excited for this remix of the albums title-track, Evil Friends, that boasts production from Jake One and a verse from Danny Brown.



I knew this group had some hip-hop in ‘em; it just took the genius Jake One to bring it out. I wasn’t really feeling Portugal’s version of the song, it was a little to heavy for me, but Jake softens it and gives a really cool drum beat with some subtle bells and whistles that really set off the vocals of Portugal's front-man John Gourley (who did the dope art for the remix) . The beat is so good it fits the vocals of both Gourley and Brown, which are very, very different. I don’t normally listen to Danny all that much - his sound is a little to grating for me - but I would eat up a whole album of this. They are totally different sounds but Uno connects them so well and makes it sound so natural. Danny’s effort is cool, but Jake really makes this cut in my opinion.



Sadly, this effort wont be on Danny Brown’s album Old, set to drop on September 30th, but still we can enjoy it for what it is. I won’t lie I feel a little proud we posted about this group weeks before this tape. Not saying Jake One or Danny Brown read RefinedHype, but its nice to know out tastes are shared by some artists in the hip-hop game. (And if they do read RefinedHype, I'm expecting royalties, Danny. Shit, at least some scrap metal.)
