Watch This Sh*t Now: Portugal. The Man’s “Modern Jesus” Video

Posted by Lucas G. on 08/09/13 | Filed under Videos, Non Hip-Hop, Portugal. The Man
Here at Refined Hype, we are all hip-hop, all the time. Unless of course we find something outside the hip-hop bubble that needs to be seen and/or heard. In which case fuck it, let's listen to some "Non Hip-Hop". Cue Portugal. The Man. I was familiar with the Portland, Oregon group thanks to their 2009 album, The Satanic Satanist, but I had since forgot about them. Songs like “People Say” are cool, and unique, but they were a little soft for my tastes

I was really into their sound briefly, but there just wasn’t enough power to keep me entertained for long. It has been a minute since I listened to them and I have to admit, they totally fell of my radar. Thanks to Nathan, who discovered their new stuff, I might have to go on another Portugal. The Man bender. Specifically, Nathan put me on to the video for “Modern Jesus” and in addition to having an more edgy and dense sound, the dudes show they really know how to make a video.

If you watched this with the sound off you might think it is a hip-hop video. The gritty landscapes and colorful depictions of people from all walks of life reads like a hip-hop video. I have always loved the way these kind of hip-hop videos really capture authentic people and places, putting something we might not deem as “beautiful” in a different light. This video does just that, placing groups and people you might not normally see in the spotlight; the backyard-wrestling scene is definitely the most powerful and is cool contrast to the bands glossy sound. In addition to this video, the band has dropped two more videos from there Evil Friends album one for "Purple Yellow Red and Blue" and another for "Atomic Man". "Modern Jesus" is still the best video (and song) but they group definitely continues the trend of different, visually intriguing visuals.

Still not sold on checking out Evil Friends? Well to seal the deal (at least it did for me) Danger Mouse produced the album in full. I totally slept on this album but I will definitely be checking it out this weekend.
