Trinidad James, Indie Music Hero (Or Not)

Speaking of which….I’m not mad at Def Jam signing Trinidad James. I can’t say it’s a wise investment given his supremely short track record, but whatever, I do think he’s better than a lot of people give him credit for.

But in retrospect, this Hot 97 interview is mildly infuriating. And I quote:

“Are you looking to sign?”

Trinidad James: “I’m really not focused on that. Labels, they’re gonna be there if you hot. I’ve seen all of ‘em. I don’t even really think about labels.”

And then a week later (a week!) a $2 million dollar deal is announced. Fuck that. As I broke down in the podcast, it’s common place for rappers to sign and then hide their signing for months to make themselves look “indie”. That’s to be expected. But to get on the radio talking about “I don’t even really think about labels,”, a a few days later the ink is dry on a massive Def Jam contract?

Evading the truth is to be expected, but that shit is just openly fleeing from the truth.
