Sometimes, when it comes to my next artist to listen to, I let the hip-hop gods decide. It is kind of funny how it works, there will be an artist who I have on my long list to check out, and out of some divine intervention they keep coming up. Whenever that happens I take it as a sign that it is time to listen to them. With Freddie Gibbs it all started with hearing his verse on David Dallas’ “My Mentality” (which is hotter than a thousand suns by the way) a few months back. Since that time, Gibbs’ name has been crossing my path pretty regularly. The final instance came when I was minding my own business cruising the streets of Los Santos in "GTA V" and next thing you know I hear BJ The Chicago Kid and Freddie’s “Smoking and Driving” and that’s when I knew it was time I really give Freddie a good listen. Which is why he is the spotlight of this week's "Weekend Rewind".

While I am not too familiar with his music, I already know a fair amount about Gibbs. When it comes to underground emcees, Gibbs is among the most well respected and authentic. I already have a great deal of respect for him and how he handled the CTE/Jeezy situation; in industry where nothing is what it seems, Gibbs doesn’t put up a curtain. He is who he is; an unapologetic, hard-nosed emcee.

His style isn’t exactly my forte, I don’t normally go for the “gangsta” hip-hop, but there are a few artists who I enjoy that do it and I think Gibbs might be one. His flow is so unique and so strong and the content has a gritty authentic vibe to it. there are a few instances where I enjoy that kind of stuff, when it is done right and feels real and I think Gibbs might just fall into that category. Even if his content isn’t my favorite, his flow is just so good it will be hard to not like. Per the advice of Nathan, I am turning to Gibbs' "Cold Day In Hell" mixtape a run.
