When I saw the other day that the Chicago (yes another awesome Chicago talent) septet, The O’My’s, were set to drop a new cut, I was really excited. Though the sample size is small, I really like what I have heard from them.

The group got my attention working with some of Chicago’s brightest young stars like Nico Segal (“Living Wrong”), Chance The Rapper (on the criminally overlooked “Wonder Years”), and they have even worked with the likes of Twista and Chick Inglish (“Bout A Dollar”). The cut they did with ZZ Ward, “Lil’ Darlin" is a banger. While their resume has impressed, I have yet to hear something without the assistance of a rapper or two that has got my attention. Don’t get it twisted, if they did nothing but work with rappers (and their frequent producer collaborator Blended Babies) I would be happy, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t curious to hear what they could cook up on their own.



Cue “Cough Drop”, the first single off their forthcoming album, "A Humble Masterpiece". Their sound is fresh and the instrumentals are solid - I particularly love the horns at the end - but there was something about Maceo Haymes vocals that didn’t hit with me. I really wanted to love this song, but couldn’t quite go all in. I gave it a few more listens after my initial one but my impressions stayed the same. This vocal performance was pretty unexpected as I have heard him sing before and it doesn’t always sound so nasally; it almost sounded like he had a mouth full of peanut butter or something. Normally he has much more soul in his voice. It isn’t terrible and as part of an album, I’m sure it won’t be bad, but I am a little surprised this was the single they chose.

It doesn’t have that same bluesy, layered sound I came to expect. All the pieces are there, and I really do want to like it, but I might need your help RefinedHype Nation. What do you think about this cut? A I crazy or does sound a little strange to anyone else?
