So yesterday, when discussing August 20th being a big day for hip-hop I mentioned Rapsody’s She Got Game and Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris album as the big releases that day. Well, as RefinedHype Nation citizens Yeeeaaah! and Zak Tobes pointed out in the comments, I was forgetting about A$AP Ferg’s album, Trap Lord, which is also set for an August 20 release and like the other two projects, was also made available for stream. Well, ask and you shall receive, RefinedHype Nation; lets talk Ferg shall we?

If you couldn’t tell by me leaving out the album in the first place, I have absolutely no idea what A$AP Ferg is all about; although with an album entitled Trap Lord, I can guess. Obviously, he s part of the A$AP Mob, but the only member of the mob that means anything to me is Rocky, who I actually enjoy. I was pretty surprised that Ferg was signed to Polo Grounds and RCA considering he doesn’t really have any resume at all. He was on the A$AP Mob’s Lords Never Worry mixtape and has some guest spots, but as for solo projects, he seems to be a relatively unproven commodity. Like my Trinidad James experiment from earlier this week, I went into this album with an open mind, but to be honest, with a title like Trap Lord I didn’t have high expectations.



Although it has only been a few listens I have to say, even for a trap album (nothing against it but it is not my thing) this is sub-par. The beats are solid and his hooks are catchy, but his flow is all over the damn place. Take “Shabba” for instance. The albums single is basically a microcosm for the whole album. The beat is quirky and interesting and the hook runs right along with the left-of-center vibe, but for me Ferg’s flow kills it. He starts off rapping normally, but then does this weird slurred, staggered sung flow that I just can’t get into. I get what he was trying to do and commend him for being different, but it was just poorly executed. Luckily Rocky is there to save the cut. There is just something about his flow that really puts me off; I think its that he tries too many things with his vocals that it is hard for me to get my bearings. It’s not the trap feel because, pretty much every feature (except for James and French Montana) I dig—“Lord” with Bone Thugs is probably my favorite cut—which leads me to conclude Ferg just doesn’t do it for me.



I’m sure to some, who have more of a tolerance for trap, this will go over well; it is definitely good workout music, but I just can’t do it. Normally, if an artist has a unique approach, I can appreciate it, but with Ferg it is just way too inconsistent. So RefinedHype Nation can you convince me otherwise on A$AP Ferg or are you in agreement that Trap Lord is not worth our time or money?
