Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” Is The Non Hip-Hop Song of the Year (2013 RefinedHype Awards)Posted by Nathan S. on 12/18/13 | Filed under Opinion, Debates, Non Hip-Hop, RefinedHype Awards |
It's that time of the year when everyone does their "Best of the Year" lists, but how many of those can you really read? So around these parts we do things a little different. Ladies and gentlemen and intelligent animals with the ability to read things on the interwebs, welcome to the 2013 RefinedHype Awards!
Here are the rules. First, this isn't a democracy, it's more like a benevolent dictatorship. I chose the nominees after careful consideration drinking. But instead of whining that your favorite rapper/song/whatever didn't make it in, I'm allowing write in votes. Whoever gets the most votes wins that category, even if y'all override my nominations with a write-in vote. Period. I'll announce all the winners on Wednesday, December 18. And I'll be explaining the criteria and nominees for each category every time. Got it? Good.
Next up, we've got the Non Hip-Hop Song of the Year, because even the nerdiest rap nerds know there's more great music out there than just rap....
UDPATE: The voting is now closed. Scroll to the bottom for the winner.
Just like the upcoming Rap Song of the Year, we're looking for a blend of overall impact and inherent enjoyment. If a song is awesome but only seven people listen to it? Not the song of the year. If a song gets 50 million people to listen to it but sucks? Not the song of the year. We want both. And I'd throw in that the true test is that when you think back on 2013, you have to think of this song. Let's get into it:
I'd have to say this is the year's leading, "Oh fuck, is this shit going to be stuck in my head all day? Fuck, it is, isn't it?" I don't care how ruggish thuggish bone you are, you enjoyed this shit. Plus, it featured Pharrell and sold approximately eleventy billion copies. (I'm clearly too lazy to research Google the actual number, but I think we can all agree it was a fucking huge song.)
It just occured to me to call Lorde the Chance the Rapper of non hip-hop. Neither is the biggest superstar in their genre, but compared to where they were in 2012, they had the biggest year, and they did it via some intensely honest and quality music. 365 days ago nearly no one knew who Lorde was, now she's something close to a household name. And yeah, even though you might be turning against it because it's been so overplayed, this song is still fucking awesome
More of an underground pick than the previous two, but we posted this song in August and we haven't stopped listening to it since. It's a little hard to separate the song from the amazing video, but either way, it's going in. Inherent quality on this song is off the charts for me.
Here's where that whole benevolent dictatorship thing kicks in. Did "Concrete Waves" technically come out in two years ago? Yes, yes it did. Doesn't that technically disqualify it? Yes. Do I give a fuck about the technicals? I do not. These are the RefinedHype Awards, and I care more about happened on this site than in the larger world. This is the year that Kendra Morris became an RefinedHype Nation citizen, and the year I listened to "Concrete Waves" 478 times, so it's going in. End of story.
For the record, I would never do something so nefarious as throw Lucas under the bus and say that he really pressed for "Wrecking Ball" to be included here, even after he already declared his love for the song. I would never do that. Jokes aside though, he does have a point - I'll be damned if that isn't one of the best choruses of the year, and it's impact was huge. Let the controversy ensue.
Closing Notes: Really debated putting "Blurred Lines" in here, feeling like I might have made a mistake keeping it out. If it really "non hip-hop"? Is it really that good of a song? Fuck...I wouldn't be surprised if that's a popular write-in vote. I also really enjoyed me some Of Monsters and Men this year, along with some Mapei.
All right folks, get to voting. And you can do your own write in answer in the polls. Voting is now closed.
And The Winner Is.....Daft Punk "Get Lucky"
Sweet Baby Jesus, not even close, "Get Lucky" by a mile and a half. Lorde's "Royals" one of the biggest songs of the year wasn't even a close second with 60 votes to Daft Punk's 108. Obviously this is the highlight of Pharrell's year. I think "Blurred Lines" is the only other song that could have made a run at "Get Lucky" but it was just too hip-hoppy to include. Even "Wrecking Ball" got worked; I'm not surprised at the winner but I definitely thought this would be closer.
