I've spent a lot of my adult life (as a hip-hop head) trying to erase the east boast bias I grew up with; if it doesn't sound like it was produced by DJ Premier, it can't be good. So yes, on the real my instinct would be to skim through Kevin Gates' new "The Luca Brasi Story" mixtape and then dismiss it, but I had enough people tell me it was really worth my time to take a close listen. They were right.

Apparently Gates is pretty big in his native Louisiana, and is affiliated although not officially signed to Cash Money, but I'd never heard of him before last week. A quick skim through "Luca Brasi" will likely leave you thinking he's in that quasi-Future or Waka harmonious trap rap lane, and you wouldn't be wrong, but a closer listen reveals an emcee with some real depth. Just skip to "I Need It", or the closing cut "IHOP", if you need proof.

Maybe it's best to think of Gates as a less insane Gunplay, or a more intelligent version of Lil Boosie. Frankly I'm clearly having some trouble describing him, maybe it's best you just listen and decide for yourself...
