Everything You’ll Ever Need To Know About The “Harlem Shake” Meme (Videos)

Posted by Danielle Harling on 02/13/13 | Filed under Humor, Videos, General Awesomeness

When I first heard about the latest meme to take the internet by storm, I couldn't help but wonder who would bring back the seizure-esque Harlem shake dance. But upon further investigation (a.k.a. help from Nathan S.), I discovered that the "Harlem Shake" meme has absolutely nothing to do with the dance. Instead it's more of a viral video that incorporates dance and other randomness. (You can find the original "Harlem Shake" video above.)

Well, a bunch of folks were inspired to create their own "Harlem Shake" videos based on the original. And from the video below (which has more views than the original) it seems that a certain formula was created that's now included in the countless other meme attempts. The formula works something like this: a lone masked person starts dancing (there's usually some air-humping involved), there's a brief pause and then everyone else in the video is taking part in some kind of crazed dance.

A ton of "Harlem Shake" videos have been released in the past week or so and yeah, a lot of them suck, but you do have a few gems. Take for instance the swim and dive team at UGA's underwater version.

Anyone think the "Harlem Shake" meme is powerful enough to penetrate (pause) the world of Hip-Hop?

Nathan S. Update: I had to throw this one in there as well:
