Is Del Tha Funkee Homosapien The Most Slept On Emcee Ever? Posted by Lucas Garrison on 09/23/13 | Filed under Opinion, Debates, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien

Yeah yeah I get it. Between Drake, Eminem and Justin Timberlake, there is plenty to talk about when it comes to fall albums but that still doesn’t explain why there's almost no discussion about Del the Funky Homosapien (AKA Deltron 3030) and his forthcoming album, Event II. We talked about it a little over the summer, but since, and even now, with the stream of the album being made available at Pitchfork.com, it seems like Del is getting no love. Considering his contributions to hip-hop over the last 23 years, I am willing to call him the most slept on emcee in the game.

Since forming the Hieroglyphics way back in 1991, Del has been an underground staple; hell, he even worked his way into the mainstream. Everybody and their mother knows “Clint Eastwood” by the Gorillaz, but I bet about 80% of people who know that song have no idea who Del is. It’s criminal that someone who was such an integral part of tone of the best, most popular songs in the '00s is still relatively unknown. For me it was always how varied and unique his sound was. Del has a flow and voice unlike any other emcee and he can spit over an kind of beat, but my favorites was when he splashed a little funk into it, which, as a big funk guy, I appreciate. That funk influence is always what drew me in with Del. He was able to keep his hip-hop roots, but the funk always served as that unique edge that made of truly one of a kind listening experience. Hip-hop has always been about creativity, taking risks, and originality and while, Del represents that to the fullest, he is too often is overlooked for more traditional emcees.

Rather than go on and on about how great Deltron is (which I would be happy to do) I thought it would be better to create a playlist of some classic Del cuts for those of you who might not be hip to the game. If you are indeed hip, then enjoy these Del favorites. This is also the perfect time to introduce Songdrop, a feature we will be using much more often in the months to come. The proof is in the music and all that needs to be said about Del is in these songs. Enjoy and pleas, if you are sleeping…wake up!
