Evidence’s Shares His Vinyl Collection, Inspires Me to Go Crate Diggin’

Wayyyyyyyy back in June I wrote about starting a vinyl collection, and since I really haven’t devoted as much time to it as I had planned. One thing I did not realize was how difficult it could actually be, and how big the commitment it was. The whole process can be kind of overwhelming to someone, like myself, who doesn’t really know what the fuck he is doing when it comes to crate diggin’. I go in not knowing what I am looking for, or where to find it. It’s a lot harder than just walking in there and picking up a few dope records; it is meticulous and takes a special kind of patience. I have to say though, after hearing this Fuse interview with Evidence, specifically about his vinyl, I am feeling inspired to dive back into the crates.

There is so much cool shit in this interview, from the story about meeting Kanye (spoiler Kanye bought 10 grand worth of shoes from DJ AM) and how “Last Call” came to be, to how he organizes his collection. But what really got me was when he talked about just starting out. He too, had no experience or prior knowledge about how to dig. I am not saying any rookie crate digger is the next Evidence, but it is nice to know that the more you go, the better at it you will become, and who knows what will happen when you find the perfect record?

For someone who is a history guy and a rap nerd, hearing these stories and seeing the records he has is simply fascinating; the look into hip-hop history inspires me to keep at it. Any record stores open late night?!

Nathan Update: We now know Evidence's first song he ever memorized: Newcleus' "Jam On It".
