A few weeks back,I took a crack at creating the best hip-hop football team. I don’t mean to brag, but I am 100% sure my squad could take on the legendary ’72 Dolphins. Since I already mastered football, I figured it was time to test my skills at other sports too. What better time than now, especially because Big Sean just crafted his own basketball team and it is garbage; I know I can make a team that would crush his pathetic D-league squad. Sean shared his dream team with hiphopdx.com:

“I’d be captain of the team, so I’d be pushing [points]. I’d be making the plays, setting it up right,” Big Sean explained. “And if it was my team, if I was the captain of course I’d have ‘Ye on my team cause that’s G.O.O.D. Music. So, he’d probably be like shooting guard. Somebody I can rely on. I definitely have to have Em on there. I have to have Em on there for sure. I have to have Jay on there. 2 Chainz, definitely the big dog right there…That’s what it is right there then.”

I have no doubt in my mind Sean’s team would be the Bobcats of hip-hop. First of all Kanye is an awful pick. There is zero chance he would pass the ball and you know he would freak out every time a teammate missed a shot or did something stupid; he would totally be a flopper too. Em is another poor choice. He is old and is a recovering addict which would definitely be a liability; he may get suspended or stop showing up all together. Jay is another poor choice, he too is old and is definitely not in great shape. Plus he is an agent , which would mean his interests are split. Picking himself was expected, but again, its not a good choice. He’d be the Darko Milicic of the squad. 2 Chainz is the only halfway decent pick as he has the height and is an athlete. Point Guard: Supernatural
The point guard is the one who keeps the offense moving; he is the quarterback of the team. He must be able to score himself, but more importantly play with in the system and get his teammates open. He often isn’t the best scorer, but his ability to create for his teammates far outweighs his lack of scoring. While playing with in the system is important, a point guard needs to know how to tweak his game to create opportunity. Nobody would be better at going with the flow than Supernatural because he is such a great freestyle emcee; he can think on his feet and is oh so fluid. He is hands down the best freestyler ever. His stuff is so good, if you didn’t know any better you would think it was written. Supernat would be great at giving what the game gives him and while he is definitely not afraid to take the shot, he has no problem dishing the rock; as long as he gets the win he doesn’t care who scores. He is also a highly respected battle rapper giving him the confidence to take anybody one on one. As the icing on the cake, you know he loves the game; he was the commentator for NBA Ballers on Playstation 2 and even created the theme song.



Shooting Guard:Andre 3000
The shooting guard needs to be the best shooter on the team, but also needs to be able to pass when the shot isn't there. He should also be versatile enough to run the rock like the point guard. In my opinion Andre 3000 would be a great SG. Andre is one of the most consistent emcees around. He has been releasing quality material for almost two decades and as a guest he can take over a cut. You should never be afraid to put the ball in his hands because you know at any moment he can takeover the game (or a track). Nobody is better at taking the spotlight and while he might outshine any emcee next to him, he is still making their song sound better. That would translate on the court because although he would shoot the most, other players will play better knowing he is there. If his game is anything like his flow, he would be versatile too. 3 Stacks can kill any type of beat and on the court you know he could handle the ball and keep the offense going like a point guard only with a better shot. Considering he has spent a bulk of his career sharing the limelight with Big Boi, you know he wouldn’t be a Kobe Bryant, who refuses to pass the ball.



Small Forward: Tupac
A small forward has to be athletic but most of all they have to be fearless and tough 2 Pac is all of these things. He might be a bit undersized, but what he lacks in height he makes up for in attitude. He would be a fearless defender, wouldn't hesitate to guard anybody, and has the determination and tenacity to shut them down; he is like a pitbull. His flow is more diverse than his reputation. While he is tough and can verbally take it in the paint, unafraid of contact, he also has a more finessed style. He wouldn’t mind posterizing a few cats in the paint, but if you give him the outside shot or the layup you know he can sink it. Brash, tough, enforcers (a la Stephen Jackson or young Zach Randolph) are my favorite players because they are tough as nails, much like Tupac; he wouldn’t be afraid to scrap if things got heated. Diverse, athletic, and fearless Pac is the prototypical small forward.



Power Forward: KRS-One
At 6’4”, he might be a little undersized for a real power forward, but when playing against other rappers he would be much taller. In addition to having the height, he has the attitude. Power forwards have to be tough and must do the little things to make things easier for the team. The Power Forward is largely responsible for cleaning up on the boards and has to be able to use his body to get rebounds; KRS-One, with one of the more assertive flows in the game, would be perfect for this and he is one of the most complete emcees around; there isn't a weakness in his game. KRS would be a lot like Kevin Garnett, tough, fearless, aggressive, and very well rounded. There aren’t too many emcees who would want to go toe-to-toe with KRS because he can outsmart you and overpower you.



Center: Chali 2na
The Jurassic 5 member might be a wild card, but he also might be the tallest emcee in the game, coming in around 6’8”. His flow just sounds like a center too. It might be slower, but it is one of the more overpowering, commanding flows in hip-hop. He won't outrun you (although he might be more athletic than you might think) but he can back you down and dunk in your face. A center is the anchor of the team; he has to be there as an outlet for his team and must control the paint and clog the lanes. Chali is often the anchor Jurassic 5 tunes with a flow much more powerful and booming than his counterparts’ finessed styles. Strong and steady, but with a quicker than expected flow he would have great footwork and could out rebound anybody.



Sixth man: Gunplay
My team is a gritty, veteran squad so I need some youthful energy coming off the bench. Gunplay would be the perfect bench/role player. He has ridiculous energy which can be so much fun to listen too, but you can’t listen to a whole album without needing a break. Similarly, on the court he could come in for a few minutes and provide a spark, but if he had to play extensive minutes, he wouldn’t be nearly as effective. You also have some off the court issues, but it’s worth it because when he is on he’s on; the rap game J.R. Smith.



Head Coach: Jay-Z

Jay would make a great coach. He knows the game inside and out and the players would really respond to him. Jay would be a great X’s and O’s guy too; he is smart and inventive and could really develop a good game plan. He is the ultimate shot caller.



Sorry Sean, but my team would blow yours out of the water. Oh by the way the name of my team? Tune Squad (a Space Jam reference for those out of touch). So Refined Hype Nation, think you can beat my squad? I’m willing to give the creator of a better team 5 million Refined Hype Dollars; put up or shut up!
