An Honest Attempt to Like Future’s “Honest”, Honestly

Posted by Lucas Garrison on 09/11/13 | Filed under Videos, Future

Before I judge an artist, I almost always try to give them a fair shot (as I did with Trinidad James), but sometimes it's totally okay to judge a book by its cover. For example, you hear one French Montana song and you pretty much know whether or not you like them. Future is another artist who doesn’t need a deep exploration of their library to know if you like him or not. I don’t think I have ever heard a Future song all the way through, but I know enough to say he isn’t my cup of tea, and frankly unlike Trinidad James, I really don’t get Future’s appeal.  Still, I am willing to give him a shot so with his new video single, "Honest". So in the spirit of the song, let's give him an honest listen. Honestly.

His vocals are definitely unique and while normally, I can at least appreciate something different, I don’t really like it here; it sounds way to flanged and artificial. I think Future suffers from Akon syndrome. His interesting vocals are great for a hook or guest spot, but to be frank, his voice gets annoying and is not substantial enough to carry a song on its own. Maybe it is his hook-friendly sound thatt makes him popular. People love catchy hooks and, thanks to his formulaic structure (where he rhymes “honest “ with “honest” 5,000 times), this whole song sounds like one big hook. As with any of these endeavors I try to find something I like but that is very hard here. It’s not terrible, but there just isn’t much substance or value. If Future is on a hook I might check it out, but I probably won’t be listening to any of his solo stuff. Sorry, Future, just being honest.

Am I missing the key that unlocks the glory that is Future? Do I need to hear more? Am I completely right? As always, let me know RefinedHype Nation.
