Wiz Khalifa Goes Pop on Misleadingly Titled New Single “Roll Up” (Listen & Download)

The lord works in mysterious ways. And by "the lord" I clearly mean heavily tattooed rappers who smoke weed by the bale. Just a couple days after we started wondering what Wiz Khalifa's next post "Black & Yellow" single would be, Wiz answers the question in the form of "Roll Up", a song that I guarantee you won't see coming based on the title.

I'm hearing "Roll Up" on two levels. On one level, it's a smart move for Wiz. If we've learned anything over the last few years it's that you need a light jam for the ladies to truly make a hit - radio programmers wet themselves as soon as they heard this. So all respect due on the business/marketing side of the equation. But on a personal level, considering I don't have a vagina and would have thought this was a Ray J and New Boyz track if I just heard the hook, I'll never be pressing play on this again.

Not that I'll have a choice, I'm sure "Roll Up" will be as unavoidable as herpes at a porn convention in a matter of weeks.

E. Jaffe	Extremely solid radio single. This won't be another "Black & Yellow" but it should break the Top 40 with relative ease. Do we know who produced this? If I had to guess, I'd probably go with Jim Jonsin.

Aussie_Pride	Yea its stargate, Jonsin produced another Wiz track that just leaked, 'on my level' thats got too short in it. That track is seriosuly dope, but isnt a radio track.

d-mac	Not bad, definitely for the ladies, but appeals to the top 40 crowd without being cheesy. It shows that Wiz has grown as an artist.

TheBayToLA	ya if you look at flight school and his old mixtapes, you will se he has always switched up the styles. Thats why i love him, even if i dont like this song so much. 'On my level' is a hit though, probly wont touch black&yellow;, but i'll be playing it alot more. Any word on the audio download for "on my level"?

matza	It's definitely an Jim Jonsin-esque approach by StarGate. We will probably hear the latter more often on/behind pop-rap records due to black and yellow's success. I think most of us will agree that Wiz's recent success is mostly based on the Norwegians' boardwork since he's not a lyrical master. unsurprisingly, the song itself is catchy as hell and could hit the top20 though.

Over the last few days I've gone through the full range of emotions on this record. At first I didn't really like it, then I thought "what the hell, it's catchy, radio will like it," and now I'm back to "fuck that. Since when is radio liking something a reason for me to like it too?"

I's sure someone's writing me a "why do you hate Wiz" email right now, so let me make it clear - I don't hate Wiz at all. But this record's wack, and I'm not afraid to say so.
