Welcome to Compton: I Want That Old Snoop Dogg Back

Posted by CPT on 03/21/13 | Filed under Opinion, Snoop Dogg, Welcome to Compton
Monday morning while cleaning my Harlem NYC apartment, I decided to let Ice Cube radio on Pandora take me back to my days on 139th & Central. Hip-Hop heads like me know what that kind of nostalgia can do to one’s psyche, and I just had to let everyone Uptown know exactly what got me up in the morning, and what I fell asleep blasting in my ears at night. Cube, Kurupt, Daz, DJ Quik, Suga Free, legends that (aside from Cube) my NYC crew barely recognize. But I didn’t realize how much this music affected me until Pac’s “I Wonder If Heaven’s Got a Ghetto” came on, and I started balling my eyes out. Not a classy, single tear drop situation, I’m talking red eyes, snotty nose status. And I couldn’t explain why I broke down, still don’t completely get it. All I know is I was a mess for the next 20 minutes, until Snoop Lion’s “La La La” came on, and that sad nostalgia turned to anger.

Just so I’m clear, I completely get Snoop’s growth. He’s 41 and understandably tired of the same gun bussin’ / pimpin’ tracks that have made him a legend. But as a fan who literally grew up hearing my big brothers blast Snoop through the walls, and looking at videos that showed the blocks my people frequented, I just can’t let go of the Dogg. Even when he went all “Sexual Eruption” on me, he was still G with it. Call me selfish, stunted, or whatever the fuck else, but I just can’t get with the Lion.

In my heart of hearts, I get it. He’s on his positive shit which is admirable. In his new documentary "Reincarnated" he speaks of having no material he could perform at the White House, which I also understand. My mind gets the logic of it, but my heart and eardrums ain’t havin’ it. I know, I know “If you want my old shit, buy my old album.” Thanks for the advice Mr. Carter. But I already got them shits, so now what?

Now, I just have to suck it up. Now I have to be proud of the man Snoop has become. Now I have to show my loyalty to the coast that bred me. Now I just have to wrap my head around the fact that he’s no longer the Snoop that raised me. Who knows, maybe it’ll grow on me. Actually, his new track “No Guns Allowed” featuring Drake isn’t bad and has a very timely message. It’s no “Lay Low,” but it’s aight. I guess.
