Weekly Re-Up: Jay Z Makes Dreams Come True, Drake Ruins Karaoke & More

Posted by Lucas G. on 01/10/14 | Filed under Top Stories, Humor, Weekly Re-Up, General Awesomeness, Fails

Listen, it's Friday, we get it. Nobody really wants to do anything that involves using your brain. So the new "Weekly Re-Up" will provide you with both the biggest "Fails" and the most awesome "General Awesomeness", as well as some other must see shit from the week, and of course some boobs. We will also be including a "Weekend Rewind" selection to give you something to listen to this weekend. It's a whole lot of everything.

Now, let's get started... the first of many Re-Up's of 2014.

General Awesomeness

Mini Hov

Finding tickets for Jay Z's tour is not easy, take it for someone who tried to sell their body soul for them. If you managed to get tickets you should feel very lucky, but not as lucky as 12-year-old Justin. As a kid remember going to a show and dreaming about getting plucked out of the crowd by your favorite artist to perform alongside them? Heck, I still dream about that. Well, at a show last week in North Carolina, this pre-teen Hov-head got to live a dream. Jay Z saw his "Can I rap for you sign", picked him out of the crowd and let him perform the verse to "Clique".

It's nice to see that under all the Tom Ford and behind all the Basquiat's there is still a guy out there who loves his fans. When you think about all the money and endorsements he has, it might seem like he is a shell of a person, but this shows otherwise. Even cooler though is seeing Justin's smile after he finished; also watching him collect himself and get ready is pretty funny too. I also love how he asks to meet Jay backstage after. In the words of Jay himself, "Can't knock the hustle"

Emcee Trebek

Besides someone falling down or being awkward, old white people reciting hip-hop lyrics will always be a fail (like this lady). But when Alex Trebek is the one rapping, it is nothing but awesome; exception proves the rule I guess. While knowing presidents and 18th century Renaissance painters is expected, I'm not quite sure anybody really studies their hip-hop before going on Jeopardy, but that didn't stop them making a category specifically about hip-hop.

While seeing him on something so mainstream and family-friendly as Jeopardy put a smile on my face but the real juicy awesomeness comes from Trebek saying the lines. There is just something so magical about his voice reciting Dre lyrics, it is like music to my ears and is so awesome my head is going to explode. This needs to be a regular thing.

Fails Of The Week

Drake-e-oke

I am a god awful singer, so it will never be a reality, but if I were some expert crooner or big name artist, I always think about how fun it would be to go to a karaoke bar and just fucking wreck shit; could you imagine the looks on peoples faces if the likes of Usher or Ne-Yo strolled in to the local bar and hopped up on stage? Perhaps I had it all wrong though, because judging by Drake's Karaoke experience, it looks about as sloppy, drunk, and poorly executed as an karokee night I have been to. Thanks to some in depth journalism over at Noisey we got a break down of Drizzy karaoke experience and it is about the worst thing ever.

I guess what is so weird about this is that it seems like it is just Drake and his entourage where are like any other people. A spontaneous karaoke night with the boys is exactly the kind of thing I would make up to make fun of him but wouldn't think he would actually, you know, do it; seems like a scene straight from "Sex and The City 3 "if you ask me. Second, I wouldn't expect it to be this bad. I mean I know it's karaoke, but even I would expect better from Drake this is disorganized and sloppy; no professionalism. Now it's not a nationwide tour or anything but clean it up a little bit. Last, Drake's laugh is horrendous; just awful.  Great way to start off the fails of 2014.

Drake isn't the only one ruining "I Will Survive" either. As if you needed another reason to hate them, the Heat put out karaoke video of their own. I know it's for charity, but that doesn't make them good singers nor does it make me want them to get swept by the Thunder any less.

A Moment Of Silence Please...

One day, when channel surfing I stumbled on to "Love and Hip-hop". I was excited that their might be a new, dope hip-hop show that I had somehow missed. Nope, just some god awful "reality" TV dribble that has nothing to do with love and even less to do with hip-hop. So VH1 is slowly but surely killing "hip-hop"...great. I might expect the likes of Soulja Boy or some other random washed up rapper to appear on one of these kind of shows, but never someone who I hold in high regard. Well, that nice little thought I had is ruined with this video.

If you want to have any faith in humanity I highly suggest not watching because above and below are video clips from "Couples Therapy" starring Ghostface Killa. Yes, the rough and tumble, Shakey Dog emcee is turning in his golden eagle wrist bands for a shot at the silver screen. Ugh. A dark day for all of those who hold hip-hop near and dear. I know he probably  isn't going to be doing shampoo endorsements and Katy Perry collabs, but still seeing him turn to the dark side hurts deep.

Weekend Soundtrack

So I am seeing Dizzy Wright next week and I needed to brush up. I relaized I never gave his The Golden Age tape much attention when it dropped  back in August. Well I am listening to it now and am VERY impressed. With 22 racks and some phenomenal production it sounds more like an album to me. Some sogns are a little to trappy for me but when he is at his best, Dizzy is deep, introspective, creative and fun to listen to. Some great work here and he definitely has mainstream appeal, could be a big 2014 for him; he sounds polished, confident, and ready.

Comment of the Week

Our man Brandon Davis went in on our Rap Game Superhero article. This is just the abridged version:

AH Nate I got it! Jay-Z is the rap game Tony Stark aka Iron Man; Kanye can get Hulk but not Green Scar Hulk as he is know now but loud dumb Hulk, sorry Kanye but being loud and obnoxious gets you there. I'll Give J. Cole Superboy, cool character but unless he is written well many won't care for him much. Kendrick, I'll give him Rap game Martian Manhunter, sure MM is afraid of fire but if he overcame that? Almost no one would want to mess with him, not even Superman he's one of the greatest forces in DC with that Handicap and Kendrick brings the fire almost everytime so...

Of course...Booty!

Before I saw American Hustle  I never thought much of Jennifer Lawrence. Everyone thought she was so great and down to earth and it kind of made me hate her a little bit. Well, after American Hustle  I am all aboard the J-Train. Girl can get it. That "Come To Mama" scene made me a believer in the worst way.  Oh the movie is fucking awesome too, but mainly, J Law.
