Joey Bada$$'s latest project might sound like it's titled after a corny Tom Cruise movie set during medieval times, but I assure you corniness is one thing "Summer Knights" lacks. Released earlier today, the free album features a bevy of tracks (17 total) from the promising Brooklyn emcee who recruits a welcoming assortment of beatsmiths for the project.

There's no questioning Joey's lyrical dopeness, but in a previous post I brought up the fact that he tends to lean towards tracks that are heavily reminiscent of 90's Hip-Hop. Surprisingly, there is a little more variety from the Pro Era spitter on "Summer Knights." Only two tracks into the album and we're treated to "Hillary Swank," a record that's less nostalgic and instead boasts a refreshingly jazzy beat. But with records like the Alchemist-produced "Trap Door" there's obviously still a lot of 90's influence, but the occasional break from that sound makes for a well-rounded project.

Not to get too off track, but with the release of projects like "Summer Knights" and Chance The Rapper's equally-welcomed "Acid Rap," does anyone else see a Kendrick Lamar-esque path for either Joey or Chance?
