While we all like to state our musical opinions as facts—saying “he sucks” or “that guy can spit”—the truth of the matter is that music is one of the more subjective things on the planet. What might not be good to you is someone else’s favorite song and as much as you’d like to, you can’t tell them they are wrong (unless its Rebecca Black, then, they are wrong). However, there is one objective fact regarded as a musical truth; the Beatles kick ass. Seriously everyone from all walks of life digs The Beatles and even if you don’t think they are the best band ever, you gotta respect ‘em. Personally, I am not a Beatle-maniac, but what they did/do for music is beyond all comprehension so I'll give credit where credit is due. Another band that, while not The Beatles, is still highly regarded by all music fans is Mumford and Sons. So, you can only imagine what happened when the group finished off the UK music fest, Glastonbury, with a powerful, Vampire Weekend-assisted version the Beatles classic, “With A Little Help from My Friends”



Considering this is one of my favorite Beatles songs mostly because it was the theme to The Wonder Years (although it wasn’t the original), I had some pretty high standards, but Mumford and Sons definitely impressed. I always thought Marcus Mumford, the lead singer, had a soft-spoken, more morose sound, but he showed some serious soul and ended up carrying the performance. The instrumentals are totally different than normal M and S, too. I dig their style, but often the instrumentals are a little redundant and bland for my tastes, but this showed a little more pizzazz than normal, and was totally out of the ordinary, showing there is more than meets the eye. If this isn’t enough to win you over, maybe their bassist’s story will sell you. Earlier this month, the band's bassist Ted Dwane underwent brain surgery to remove a brain clot in his head. While most rappers take a day off for “exhaustion” or some other lame excuse, just mere weeks after brain surgery, Dwane made an appearance with the band, and even took part in performing one of their most popular songs, “Awake My Soul”; if that doesn’t make you love them, nothing well. I know the Beatles would respect their hustle...although they probably wouldn’t use those words.
