What the F**k is Sean Paul Saying? (A Very Serious Lyrical Analysis)

Posted by Lucas G. on 03/04/14 | Filed under Humor, What the Fuck Is Saying, Farty Naughty Shawty

As hip-hop heads, we make it our duty to memorize our favorite lyrics. I can't remember what I had for dinner last night or where my keys are, but ask me to spit City Spud's verse from "Ride Wit Me" and I will deliver like it's still 2001. Memorizing all of the only City Spud verse in history is easy because you know, you can understand him, but every so often there is that rare breed of emcee who when they grab the mic, you have no f**cking clue what they are saying; they might as well be rapping in ancient Latin.

To show that this isn't an excuse to bash new, often auto-tuned artists, like our first subject (Future) we decided to tackle a truly great, historic emcee, whose revolution style of mumbling incoherently has made him one of the best emcees to ever grace the mic. It's clear I am talking about Sean Paul right? Yes, even though you hadn't thought of him since that middle school  dance where you awkwardly danced with that cutie in your earth science class, it's time to dissect some mumbly jumbly bars.

Let's play What The Fuck Is Sean Paul Saying?.

Is anyone else bothered that all those people have lighters in a crowded basement? It screams fire hazard.

Guess:
No matter how many times I have heard this song, the lyrics don't become any clearer. Here, Sean is letting us know that only farm girls (or sheep) are what get him going with "Gotta be the barn type to ignite my flame"
Actual:
Hey I got the second part right, but turns out, Sean doesn't fuck sheep.

Guess:
Some guys are ass men, some are all about the boobs, Sean, well, he is an arm man. Not just any set of arms will do, your arms have to be on fire if you want to dance with Sean in a crowded basement fill of people throwing up lighters everywhere; " Girl you are the number one girl with your arms, let me see the way they burn"
Actual:
I feel like he does the first half of each line really clear and then puts in gibberish to fuck with our heads. How can one man make so much sense then a second later make absolutely no sense?

1:44
Guess:
This is one of those where I know with every fiber of my being I am wrong, but I can't think of what else it would be. There is no way in hell Sean Paul uses the word percolate and Ipanema in the same line but no matter how many rewinds I do all I can hear is, "Get crunked up, percolate anything you want from Cali to Ipanema, c'mon."
Actual:
Sweet baby Jesus! He really does say percolate! Ipanema...not so much...but percolate!

2:22
Guess:
Real talk, this is the only reason i chose this song. I don't care about any other boobally goobally, only when he starts calling girls "Miss blahblahblah". I still remember 7th grade me trying to decipher what the fuck he was saying when eating pizza bagels and watching "106th & Park".  After year and years of research, here are is my best guess, "Shake dat thing Miss cannacanna" (you know like the can can?) "Shake dat thing Annabella. Shake dat thing miss dannadanna. Yo miss Julie and the one named Rebecca"
Actual:
See it's just fucking gibberish! Last time I checked "Kana Kana" isn't a word or a name. You might have fooled everyone else, but you won't fool me Sean!

3:00
Guess:
I have heard Beyonce described  many of ways but I have never heard  "You a Thumbtack girl". What does that even mean? Is her booty so voluptuous that you are nothing more than a thumbtack to her?
Actual:
Honestly, since they aren't annotated here, I really don't know which lyric it is, a whole bunch of 'em end in girl so it's hard to tell. I guess none of them are thumbtack girl though so I am wrong...again.

:10
Guess:
Did Sean Paul really just saw "Farty  naugthy shawty"?! 10 year old me is fucking cracking up right now. Before you check out the actual lyric, really listen to that part. If you hear him say "Farty naughty shawty" and don't laugh, you officially have no soul. I don't even want to know what he really says, I need "Farty naughty shawty" to be what he says.
Actual:
Honestly I didn't read the end part so I don't know what the actually lyric is. The day I don't hear him say "Farty naughty shawty" is the day I stop listening to music.

:50
Guess:
"The way the time code I want to be keeping you on"  Sounds like some office lingo at Sean Paul's office job. Like he has to keep an employee but the way the time code is, he just can't keep them on. Yeah I know weak, but you come up with better.
Actual:
I feel dumb. I guess given the name of the song I should have known... at least I got "Farty Naught Shawty" right.

1:02
Guess:
"Tampax boards are covering the dresser". I hate when my girl leaves her tampax boards all over my dresser.
Actual:
Look, I get that my guesses make no sense at all, but at least they are words that make sense together. The actual lyric "Bumper exposed and gal you got your chest out but you no wasters cause gal you impress out..." makes no sense. He sounds like a drunk person who is using real words, but not in a context that makes any sort of sense.

1:38
Guess:
"Time for we to make baby now". Sean Paul may be from Jamaica but he sounds like fucking Drago here. "We make baby now" is the most Russian thing I have ever heard.
Actual:
Holy shit! I got one right! My life is now complete! Totally ending on that high note. Like winning the Super Bowl and retiring right then and there. I can ride off into the sunset a happy man.

2:14
Guess:
Looks like that farty naughty shawty is back rocking some stinky jeans; "and you farting in yo' jeans and me want to discover"
Actual:
Don't care. He says fart.

You know, Sena Paul's lyrics are much more fun when you just say gibberish and end it with Seana Paula. Still analyzing them was um..."interesting". I know he is Jamaican, so stuff gets lost in translation but I am 86% certain he just uses that as a cover so he can really spout gibberish. He just assumes that you aren't from Jamaica and will give him the benefit of the doubt that his lyrics are words and you just don't understand them when in reality even Jamaicans have no idea what he is saying. Give it a rest, Sean, we all know you are saying "Farty naughty shawty".
