Nathan and I have toyed with his idea before, but never really went beyond talking about it. Something so big, so life altering, so controversial has to be done at the perfect time in the perfect way, so we wanted to wait until the stars aligned. Well, after a mini-debate popped up in the comment section of the Tyson Zone piece last week, we figured it was finally time. Get some some WacArnolds, grab an ice cold Samuel Jackson beer, and take a seat on yo’ couch, it's time for the best "Chappelle’s Show" skit debate.

Before we get to the top five, let's run through the criteria so we are all on the same page. First, I think a large part portion of ranking has to do with memorable lines/quotability. To this day, the truly memorable lines are still as relevant as they were back then. The best skits had one or two of those lines that everybody would (and still do) recite over and over again. Absurdity is another big factor. When Chappelle was on top of his game he would come with some shit that was so over the top and absurd you would be left in stitches. For example, he made Lil Jon, who, in real life, is already a eccentric person, and made him that much more comical and outlandish. Lastly, while it might be hard to define, I think the eye test (or laugh test in this case) is important too. Those special skits had that x-factor or je ne sais quoi, that, though you can put a finger on it, have something extra that made them special. So, now that we have the criteria, lets get to the rankings.

5.) Real World

On the absurdity scale this one is on hundred thousand trillion. It starts out kind of normal in the whitest of white people with a bunch of thugs kind of funny way, but ends on another level when the dad is stabbed; and don’t get me started on the whole Katie sex scene part. It is also very rare when Dave gets upstaged but in this skit, Charlie Murphy’s character definitely steals the show, although “Katie’s got some nice ass titties!” is an amazing line. This may not be the best skit, but it certainly has everything you love from the show.

4.) Racial Draft
 

Cameos from Mos Def, RZA, and GZA automatically get this skit points, but it is the little things that make it so damn funny; like the two white announcers doing a little finger high-five thing after OJ is deemed black, the old Asian people throwing up W’s and of course, Tiger’s “fo shizzle”. Plus, Dave playing a white person is always funny, and this might be the best example of it. It loses points because it isn’t the most quotable skit, but everything else, including the unconventional, satirical look at race is perfection. Dave takes something that makes alot of people uncomfortable and makes it OK to laugh at.

3.) The Black White Supremacist: Clayton Bigsby

Here is where the debate really picks up. Some might have this at number one because of the history surrounding it; this might have been the most controversial skit front the show, and it just so happened do be from the first episode. The "Black White Supremacist" skit set the tone for the rest of the series; you might feel a little uncomfortable as no subject was too far for Chappelle, but at the same time you couldn’t help but laugh. While this is a memorable skit, it is more shock value than humor. It doesn’t have any truly memorable quotes, so it loses points there, and while it's definitely funny and controversial, it lacks that special dash of something that these next two have. Still, if I had one skit to show someone what the show was all about, this might be the one I choose.

2.) Rick James
 

The Rick James skit is easily the most quoted skit in Chappelle's show history. It isn’t just one line either; this skit is filled with famous quotes that still get run today. “Fuck You Couch”, “I’m Rick James bitch!”, “Cocaine is a hell of a drug”, and, of course, “What did the five fingers say to the face? SLAP!" Is there a more quoted skit? I wish I could say it won the over-the-top category, but I think most of this was actually true, which makes it even better. Chappelle as Rick James was one of his best performances and I think that while the Prince skit was dope too, this was worlds above it. Putting them side by side shows you just how amazeballs this one was. Absurd, quotable and had that special “pop”. It is almost the best Chappelle skit...almost...

1.)  Making The Band
 

This is definitely a dark horse pick, but I strongly believe the "Making The Band" skit was Chappelle’s best work. He took someone who was already a little out there in Puff and made him this absolutely bananas character. For Chappelle, making fake Diddy more popular than real (and already iconic) Diddy is a feat in and of itself. While Chappelle’s Diddy is great with the breast milk and his awesome exits, each growing more absurd by the scene—he even has the same tongue thing going on—his Dylan stole the show. The five best rappers and spit hot fire lines are still as funny today as they were day one, and have made the skit more exponentially popular than the real Dylan and the real "Making The Band". In the past year I have mentioned the skit more than any of the other three combined. It takes a lot of work to make a never-been rapper (Dylan) a cultural icon, but because of this skit Dylan is still a name you remember. The lines, the absurdity, the special something something and the history surrounding it make "Making The Band" the best "Chappelle’s Show" skit ever.
