The-Dream Just Accidentally Broke Down the State of Music Finance

INSERT KEYWORDS

At first this The-Dream interview was only kind of interesting. He says that he wrote "Holy Grail" before "No Church in the Wild" was done, that "MCHG" was finished in about two weeks, that the first songs actually came out of writing sessions for Beyonce. Your standard interesting but not that interesting rap interview stuff.

But then, around the 6:40 mark, the interview talks a sharp right turn and Dream accidentally breaks down the state of music sales more honestly than you'll almost ever hear:

To sum up, he doesn't care about album sales since he knows they're not reflective of how many people have actually heard the album. It's how many people have heard the music, not bought the music, that matters, because companies will pay to be connected with artists people are listening to, and companies have the real money. That's why Jay was able to swing the Samsung deal, because of his influence, and truth be told Jay's the only rapper alive with enough influence to pull off a deal like that (at least right now). And as long as he's at it, he points out he'll make more money off publishing for the YouTube ads that run before videos than he will off album sales - so who really gives a fuck about album sales?*

Huh, what do you know, The-Dream is good at fucking chubby assistants AND breaking down music finance. Artists, consider that a free money lesson courtesy of Terius Nash.

* I completely give a fuck about album sales.
p.s. - I almost forgot, Dream also had a recent Twitter rant about album sales.
