Rap Nerdery: The Return of the Stretch & Bobbito Show

Hip-hop's incredibly interconnected, and becoming a true rap nerd is simply about following those connections. One day you ask yourself, "I wonder where that sample at the beginning of 'Respiration' is from?" and before you know it you're watching "Style Wars" and debating the graffiti style of Dondi vs. Iz the Wiz.

So to be clear, I never actually listened to an episode of the Stretch & Bobbito show when it was live. I was too young, too not-in-New-York-City and too not-yet-completely-obsessed-with-hip-hop when it was airing. But over the years you hear the references to Stretch & Bobbito, and it doesn't take much digging to hear the stories. Big L, Jay-Z, Biggie, ODB, Talib Kweli, you name it, nearly every rapper who mattered in the '90s appeared on the duo's underground hip-hop show well before they were famous. As unlikely as it might seem, those two crazy lookin dudes above are the foundation of nearly every college radio and underground radio show that came after.

The two would eventually go their separate ways, but this weekend they re-united for one last show in their old stomping grounds, 89.9 WKCR. So if you're already familiar with their work, you're going to love this shit. And if you don't know, now you know.
