The First Ever Rapper-Baller Fantasy Draft (Bonus Podcast)

Posted by Nathan S. on 03/25/14 | Filed under Opinion, Debates, Podcasts, Sports, Bonus Points

So the other day on ye olde Twitter I dared to throw Lil Romeo's name into the rappers who also played basketball discussion, which lead to an avalanche of RefinedHype Nation questioning my rapper x baller knowledge. Well then, there's clearly only one thing to do; do hours or research and create the first ever* Rapper-Basketball Player Fantasy Draft.

I went head to head in a draft with Lucas Garrison, because he works for me and I can make Lucas waste his time on whatever I fucking want. Here are the parameters:

1) You can only draft people whose primary occupation is rapper. Meaning no basketball players who also happen to rap (Shaq, Artest, etc.).
2) We're drafting rappers as they are now. So you're getting Master P as a 43-year-old, not in his prime.
3) Five man roster, game is regulation (so NBA rules, not streetball).
4) For draft purposes, we flipped a coin to see who went first. Then we went snake draft style: first person gets the #1 pick, second person gets #2 and #3, first person gets #4 and #5, etc.

You can hit the "Bonus Points" podcast below for the blow-by-blow story of our picks but our squads are below. If I learned any lesson in this process it's that you have to really trust your eyes. For example, Thurz has personally been telling me for years that he's the best baller in rap, but I've never seen him play, and there are no YouTube clips, so I just couldn't pull the trigger.

The Monstars (Lucas' Team)

1. 2 Chainz
2. The Game
3. GQ
4. Snoop Dogg
5. Lil Romeo

The Sweet Baby Jesuses (Nathan's Team)

1. J. Cole
2. Chris Brown
3. Master P
4. Nelly
5. Mikkey Halsted

To Be Considered:

Game probably didn't play for Washington State, Cam'ron probably wasn't a Top 25 recruit, Wale is kind of turrible, Chris Brown has an And 1-esque handle, 2 Chainz doesn't like to play in the post, J. Cole dominating a 21 game vs. Chainz and Waka Flocka, Gucci Pucci can drain the three, did Stalley actually play college basketball?, Mikkey Halsted's "Best Baller in Entertainment" boast.

So now that we've set the proverbial stage, it's time to turn things over to you people. First, because I'm a competitive dick, vote on who you think has the best squad. Second, you're all obviously going to have to list your own Top 5 Picks in comments below. Keep in mind as you're talking shit about our picks that actually drafting against someone switches things up. You don't have the luxury of just handpicking your Top 5.

And....let's do this damn thing.

* Relax Guy Who Did This On A Forum Three Years Ago. I'm only saying it's the "first ever" draft like this because it sounds cool and if I Google "Rapper Basketball Player Fantasy Draft" nothing comes up.
