Who Loves “Orange Soda”? Vic Mensa Steps Out on His Own

Vic Mensa Orange Soda

If you have ever been punched in the gut, then you know exactly how I felt when I heard Kids These Days, one of my favorite, most promising artist(s) in recent memory announced their break up. If you haven’t been gut punched, but watch Game Of Thrones, the announcement of the break up was on par with The Red Wedding; yeah, it was that bad.

In addition to being crushed, I was also worried for Vic. I won’t lie, I thought he was making a mistake. Kids These Days had a sound unlike anybody else, and I thought it is what separated Vic from the rest of the pack. I have seen emcees with tremendous talent get lost in the shuffle, because they cant find that unique hook that makes them stand out; for Vic, it was the eclectic sound of his band-mates. For Mensa to get away from a winning formula was a big risk, but it seems like with his latest, "Orange Soda", it might pay off in the long run.

While its only one song, at the very least, Orange Soda, is a great jumping off point for Vic. He still has that refreshing charisma he showcased with KTD. In fact, this cut actually solves one of the few problems I had with Kids These Days. Occasionally, on songs like GHETTO, Vic had an effect on his voice that made it somewhat difficult to hear him and took away from his personable, energetic vocals. I think his sound is much better suited for a laid-back type of beat like the one on Orange Soda, which allows him to go at his own speed and really toy with his slick wordplay and delivery. I love the way his lyrics seem to roll or fall out, almost like a perfectly cooked piece of meat that falls off the bone.

While its sad to know Kids These Days will not be making any music in the foreseeable futures (I am still hoping for a reunion) I think it was more of a chapter in the growing book of the Savemoney emcees career than the whole story. While it still early, Vic definitely shows he has some staying power in a more traditional lane, which is music to my ears.

P.S. - Can anyone tell me the science behind an bong filled with orange soda?
