Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa & “Zion” Just Put Nico Segal on Your Radar

Of all the new groups or collectives coming up (i.e. A$AP Mob and Pro Era), I think Chicago’s Savemoney crew is my favorite. It’s not just because of Chance The Rapper or Vic Mensa, the poster children of the squad. My love for the crew even goes deeper than Joey Purp or Tokyo Shawn. One of my favorite members is Nico Segal, but because he plays the trumpet, he doesn’t often get the recognition he deserves. If you are a Kids These Days Fan you will know him well, as he was an instrumental (pun intended) part of the bands hybrid sound and is now touring with Frank Ocean. Last March, he put out a criminally overlooked tape in Illasoul: Shades Of Blue, but I don’t think he will be under appreciated much longer.

Under his new pen/trumpet name, Donnie Trumpet, he will release a self-titled tape later this month. The first single from the new project, “Zion” has just been released and with features from former KTD band member, Vic Mensa and the buzzing Chance The Rapper, I doubt this record will get overlooked:

While hip-hop is my wife, Jazz will always be my side girl; so when they joint together it makes for one awesome musical ménage à trios. Nico is so talented and he is one of those rare musicians/instrumentalists who can go toe to toe with any emcee without using a mic. Chance and Vic are great - Chance’s reggae-ish style was really interesting - but honestly, Nico’s section is my favorite part of the cut. My only complaint is it isn’t long enough. The little outro is nice, but just as I was getting into it ended somewhat abruptly. I’m sure I will get my fill when Donnie Trumpet drops on June 25.

P.S. - Finding out there is a project dropping soon that you had no idea even existed is a great feeling.
