Nelly’s “Country Grammar” Is Still F**king Amazing - A Throwback BreakdownPosted by Nathan S. on 08/22/13 | Filed under Humor, Videos, Nelly |
Music doesn't exist in a vacuum. The songs that have served, accidentally or purposefully, as the soundtacks to moments in our lives will always resonate with us. For me, all it takes is that first glorious "hot ish!" from Nelly's "Country Grammar" and I'm instantly transported back to a high school house party where two girls, most likely hammered off wine spritzers, were singing the hook at a drunkenly obnoxious volume. I was far too focused on the odds of these girls potentially making out than the song, but I still had it stuck in my head hours later. I wasn't alone, and within two years Nelly would be one of the most popular rappers on the planet, bigger at the time than even Jay-Z.
So while I hadn't heard "Country Grammar" in years, stumbling across it last night was like catching up with an old friend. And guess what - this video's still fucking awesome:
0:02 - A couple years later and that same skinny Nelly looked like a middleweight title contender. Turns out fame can really buy you a lot of
0:08 - First, let's acknowledge that this street scene is amazing. And props to Nelly for getting some local women and not some copy and paste video vixens (I'm looking at you 34-year-old stripper in the red boots).
0:16 - Is this hip-hop history's most notable case of a rapper repping for a team? Snoop wore that Penguins jersey in the "Gin & Juice" video, but that wasn't L.A. related. You've got to give it up to Nelly for holding it down for his hometown St. Louis Blues.
0:24 - When you've watched this video 47 times in a row, like I just have, this dude becomes a favorite. Keep an eye on him, this won't be the first time we'll be talking about his tyrannosaurus arms dance moves.
0:28 - Because every rap video needs at least one dude wearing a fake afro and what appears to be a Bengals jersey pretending to be a lion.
0:38 - Homegirl on the pink bike looks like she's nothin to fuck wit though.
0:44 - This is, of course, Nelly's infamous dick-wipe dance move, which would go onto become a huge sensation in Europe.
0:51 - I know, at first you're thinking, should I know that boxer. But then your eyes shift to the right and focus on the old dude getting his groove on between to ladies. A true American hero.
1:04 - I know this was at the height of the jersey era, but I still have to hand it to Nelly, the man's rocking an Orlando Pace Rams jersey. I can't remember, was rocking the jersey backwards a thing, or is Nelly innovating here?
1:17 - Have we figured out why girl in the pink bandana is the focal point of this video? Was she someone's cousin? Because she's not doing a whole lot - I'd take almost any woman from the street scene over her...up to and including ol' girl in the red boots.
1:21 - Oh shit, now my man in the afro and Bengals jersey is doing the robot. It's getting hot in herrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeee.
1:51 - Because guy with an iguana on his shoulder.
1:58 - My man with the tyrannosaurus arms from :24 is back, and this time he's either doing some version of the "Karate Kid" wax on/wax off, or pantomiming walking down stairs. Maybe both.
2:07 - I kind of need to know what dude with the missing tooth playing air guitar is up to now. How fucking great would it be if he went on to own a furniture store empire in the St. Louis area and is just sitting on $10 million worth of mattress sales?
2:26 - I'm not saying drugs are in involved in dude's matching black and white stripe shirt-hat combo, but they're not not involved.
2:34 - This kid's basically Cousin Terio a decade before Cousin Terio was Cousin Terio. Respect to the forefathers.
2:40 - Because guy with a snake on his shoulder.
3:05 - Holy sweet baby jesus, it's Slo Down (aka the guy in St. Lunatics who always wore the mask) without his mask! This is a moment in hip-hop history.
3:42 - Slo Down's not done - BOOM, silly string shooters from the wrist! That's why the man's a legend.
Sweet baby jesus that was fantastic - frankly I don't even care if no one else enjoyed it half as much as I did (although, don't front, you did). This one was for me, and Slo Down, and tyrannosaurus arms guys and drunk girls at high school parties. Thanks to "Country Grammar", we all live on. Fame is temporary, Nelly is forever.
