We live in a bi-polar age where regardless of, you know, reality, any criticism is framed as hatred. Jay Z could say that water is dry, and if anyone points out that water is in fact wet, they're clearly a Jay Z hater. So even though I know a lot of people will skip over this part and just get right to (ironically) writing me hate mail, let me get this in.

In a lot of respects, I agree with Machine Gun Kelly. In a lot of ways I don't think he gets enough respect. He has a truly loyal, truly large, truly die hard fan base, and you don't earn a fan base like that without earning it. And when he says, "I feel like I'm denied access to the class of hip-hop," again, I'm on board. So many people see he's white, see the obvious punk rock influence, and dismiss him as hip-hop rather than expand their idea of what hip-hop is, and what it's becoming. So on the real, I think he raises a lot of good point. But then...



"If I'm not considered in the top 10 of lyricists right now...."

Ok, well now you've lost me. I don't know if by "right now" MGK mean's currently alive, in which case he's incredibly wrong, or top ten lyricists in his age bracket, in which case he's merely very wrong, but either way, come on now man. BUT BUT BUT WAIT IT GETS WORSE....

"There's no way I'm not in the top 5..."

Top 5? TOP FUCKING 5? Of all-time? Currently alive? In the "under 30" bracket? And top 5 of what? Regardless, it doesn't really matter. He's not. He's just not.

Again, I really don't want the takeaway from this piece to be that I'm banging on MGK. I've seen him live, he puts on a great show, and I've seen his fans, they really do love him. (Although remember, "fan" is short for "fanatic", as in "a person with an extreme and uncritical enthusiasm or zeal.") But I also think he wants it both ways. Trashing stages and screaming about being a wild boy, then complaining people aren't catching the lyrical subtleties of your lyrics, is like this girl complaining people aren't interested in her views on Middle Eastern politics. Plus, as someone who admittedly obsesses over hip-hop, I just can't let rappers run around claiming to be Top 5 without comment

So keep doing your thing MGK, even if your thing isn't my thing. Lord knows I won't tell you how to rap, so let's just leave the rap rankings to the professionals. Thanks.
