When I do the research for these Meets (by "research" I mean watching sports on mute and perusing YouTube for new music) I am usually pretty open to anything. Wherever YouTube takes me is fine by me so long as I find something dope. This time however, I was in a certain kind of mood. I wanted something a little more edgy. I am always down for some R&B or soul, or even a  little pop, but none of that would do tonight. I don't know why but I wanted a little rock; it's a shame too because I did find some good, albeit softer, stuff. Literally, I couldn't click without coming across something unique and interesting, but I just wasn't inspired. I needed to be slapped in the face and punch a hole in my wall not crooned to sleep. To put it simply, fuck feelings, I want to fight. Finally, aftter way to long, I found it. Give a listen to Findlay.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Now it's not exactly straight, no nonsense rock, but I don't think that's really her thing. I love the way she incorporates a pop and sound (and just a touch of hip-hop). It has the instrumentals and attitude of a rock cut, but I also detect a waft of pop which makes her sound little bit more infectious and intoxicating. I suspect some might not like her voice, but personally I love the grimy, pained vocals. it reminds me a little but of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  Now sadly, her "Greasy Love" EP isn't available here in America, so I can't get the whole picture, but I think she has a little diversity. As much as I love "Greasy Love" I'm not always going to favor something that makes me want to punch a kitten so it'd be nice to have something else.

I almost like this kind of thing better. Her pained vocals really work with the soft, bare-bones instrumental. It takes a lot of power to kill something like "Greasy Love" but it takes a different kind of power to make something like this work. You really gotta have something unique to keep the listener invested and she has it here. I'd love to hear the EP version to see how it compares. "Greasy Love" might be my new gym song, but I'll probably end up listening to the haunting "Black Cloud Silver Lining" more. I'm curious to see if the EP is as diverse as I'm hoping.

I think this softer stuff changed my mood. I came in digging the ignant vibe but I left really liking the slower, live stuff. I think it works better (at least in my opinion) with her voice. The less feverish instrumentals really let her unique vocals drive the track, still "Greasy Love" is the track to know (so far). I suspect this might be a little different for some of you hip-hop heads, but I'm hoping most of you are down to try something unique. Enjoy or not I don't care because I'll be too busy punching kittens and setting things on fire.
