Right now, hip-hop's most popular sibling is totally Solange. I get it,she punched Jay Z so naturally, everyone who ever has used the internet has to comment on it. I get it, its (totally not) big important,news, but its frustrating when hip-hop should be buzzing over a sibling who, you know, is actually making music. The artist I am refereeing to is Chicago's own Taylor Bennett. I'm sure you have heard of this guy named Chance The Rapper, well, his brother, Taylor is also a rapper. However, don't write him off, or celebrate him, because of who his brother is. As you will see he is a bonafide emcee with a a style all his own.

That there "Demon Slayer" is my favorite effort off his new project, Mainstream Music. Since it's release, which came earlier this month, Taylor has been in steady rotation next to last weeks Meet, St. Paul And The Broken Bones; it's been a pretty good week. For such a young emcee, he has a vast array of sounds that all sound very refined. With young emcee's sometimes there are some rough patches, but Taylor sounds well beyond his years. He can fit an aggressive, trap-inspired tune like "Right Now" just as easily as a laid-back, fun track like "New Chevy" which has that distinct, feathery Chi-town sound. There is something for everyone on this tape. If you are a trap fan, he has that, if you want some no-nonsense hip-hop, he's got it, and if you like some experimental, charismatic stuff, it's on here too. The most impressive part is that despite all the changes is style and sounds, he still makes it all sound so fluid. I guess it helps that his flow is just superb and his lyrics are full of personality; I think you'll find yourself really rooting for Taylor by tapes end.

Admittedly, though, I'm biased. Not to sound like a hipster, but I have been fuckin with Mr. Bennett for a hot minute. In fact, since starting working for DJBooth, he has been one of my favorite finds; I really think he could be something special. Believe it or not, but I actually knew about him before Chance, when 16 year old Taylor was rapping under the name Shades of Gray. It is definitely a little rough around the edges, but some of his early stuff, is still his best. I think you'll be blown away when you check out these cuts.

I'm not trying to show you how cool I am or anything by saying I've known him for a while; I'm just excited to see him catching on. Most people get mad when they see their favorite, underground emcee achieve success but not me, I get so invested in these guys, especially ones as talented as Taylor, and seeing them succeed let's me know not all is lost in this world.

I'm telling you, keep an eye on this kid....
