We have all come to know (and love?) Lupe Fiasco as hip-hop’s rabble-rouser. From getting kicked off the inauguration stage to telling a group of high-schoolers at their graduation that their education doesn’t mean shit, he is no stranger to conflict, controversy, and outlandish behavior. Nothing he could do can really surprise you right? Well recently, with a few ominous tweets and an announcement of some sort of project, it seems as though Lupe might have gone off the deep end even by his standards.

Normally, when an artist drops information about a new project, we get some questions answered, but Lupe, with the announcement of his September 11…uh….EP? album? mixtape? song? doctrine? Peace Of Paper/Cup Of Jayzus we are only left with more questions. The main one being, has Lupe officially lost it? Is this some sort of elaborate performance art project? Check what appear to be the lyrics to the project below and make your own conclusions.









I don’t know what a pizza laser is, but I am choosing that each and every time; delicious and dangerous. But wait, there’s more! Now you might think that these cryptic, ominous notes are the weirdest things Lupe has posted on Twitter, but you would be very very wrong. In addition to these, Lupe has been posting some pretty weird stuff, which feels like he is on some sort of summer long acid trip. First, unless you already follow him, don’t even bother checking it out yourself because Lupe has protected his account. That’s right, in what has to be the worst publicity/ fan-base move in Tweet history, Lupe made sure nobody new can follow him or see his account. That also means that I can’t embed his best tweets of the past month, so below, I have done it the old fashioned way; cut and paste. Check out some of the highlights, which include,

Those are just a few of the many oddball tweets, but the weirdest of the weird occurred in mid-July when Lupe created North Scorea, which consists of anyone that followed him before for his account was protected. The inaugural tweet appears do be “Ahem Hear Ye Hear Ye...to all remaining followers me & WOLF Studio would like to Welcome you all to The Happy Republic Of North Scorea!”

He then goes on to declare fried chicken the national bird and elects a few lucky followers to important positions like defense minister of North Scorea, minister of finance, and Minister Of Cultural Affairs. Fiasco also introduces the the practice of “thinning”, where followers can point out other North Scorean’s for behavior that violates the peaceful rules of North Scorea. If the accuser is blindly thinning, however, they will be banned, as evidenced with this tweet, “HOWEVER if the investigation by North Scorean authorities is found 2 be baseless the Accusing parties will themselves be immediately Thinned.” While it might seem like Lupe is the ruler of this new utopia, don’t worry, according to him he is just “a mere streets and sanitation worker.” Want to visit North Scorea? I suggest a trip to the capital, YingYang. Just make sure you have enough Do Re Mi (the currency of this new nation) to get a hotel room.

While I wish I could say I made any of that Hunger Games/HarryPotter-esque shit up, all of it comes from just a few short days of tweeting from Lupe. Seriously, this is fucking bizarre even by his standards. What the hell is going on with him?

I expect him to be a politically charged emcee and have his fair share of controversy, but this seems less like some statement and more like Lupe going off the deep end. I’m not exactly sure what to expect of Peace Of Paper/Cup Of Jayzus, nor am I particularly looking forward to it. I will check it out, but with my hands over my eyes. I always respected Lupe for being a mainstream emcee but refusing to sacrifice his integrity and beliefs (no matter how extreme they are) but it is getting hard to take him seriously anymore. He has a shot to be able to say something to the watered-down mainstream, but if he keeps on like this, nobody will take him seriously. I guess I’ll just have to reminisce on the god ol’ days
