Stop Your Life & Listen to Jay-Z’ New “Open Letter” (Listen)

Posted by Nathan S. on 04/11/13 | Filed under Jay-Z
Lately I've been writing a lot about the "Friday Night Test" lately. It's Friday night, you're about to go out when you hear someone dropped a new song. Do you turn around and go back to your computer? Or say "it can wait until tomorrow" and head out the door?

As if we needed more proof of his power, Jay-Z absolutely passes the Friday Night Test. In fact he passes the Any Day, Any Time Test. When a new Jay-Z song drops, especially out of the blue, you stop your life and listen.

"Open Letter" is a rarity for Hova - the man never puts out loose, "mixtape" tracks, and for good reason. But considering the subject matter (more on that in a second) it really does seem like Jay was too pissed off to sleep, went into the studio and banged out a track, and boom, here we are.

For the record, his two main gripes seem to be politicians fronting like they're going to do something about his trip to Cuba, and the economic speculation surrounding his recent decision to sell his share in the Brooklyn Nets.

In other words, Hova just gave rap nerds another track to spend their day decoding, and I have to be grateful for that. This was completely worth stopping my life for. (Ok, fine, so my life involves rap blogging, but still, you get the point.)

p.s. - Minus 100 points for the Swizz Beatz ad-libs.
