What I Learned From Listening to Big Sean’s “Switch Up” (Listen)

When Drake dropped "Started From the Bottom" I introduced the Friday Night Test. Simply put, it's Friday night. You're about to head out to that spot you've been dreaming about all week at work, when you see that a new song from a rapper dropped. Do you listen immediately, or walk out the door and think, "I'll check it out tomorrow, it can wait."

Well, considering "Switch Up" dropped Friday night and I'm just getting around to posting now, new Big Sean obviously didn't pass my Friday Night Test. For a minute there I seriously thought about heading back to ye old computer to work on a post, mostly because I knew it'd be everywhere, but fuck it. Instead I headed out to drink some Balvenie with my homie, and I don't regret my decision in the least.

I think Big Ghostface said it best when he called Big Sean the Chicken McNuggets of rap. It's hard to actively hate Chicken McNuggets, and in the right context (aka when you're drunk) they can be delicious, but no one's saying HOLY SHIT ARE SOME CHICKEN MCNUGGETS?!? THERE IS A GOD!!!

With that in mind "Switch Up" doesn't really teach us anything we didn't already know. Sean has a great ear for beats, he can make some catchy tracks, and he loves rapping about working and then relaxing. Seriously, check it out:

"On a day to day base, then vacay for eight days" - "Switch Up"
"Long nights to get a pay day / now I need shade and a vacay" - "Mercy"
"I been up straight for nine days, I need a spa day" - "Clique"

Plus, Common drops one of the more forgettable verses of his career. So, you know, we've got that going for us.

Re-reading this it sounds more negative than I meant. On the whole I like Big Sean, and I like "Switch Up"; I guess I'm just not drunk enough right now to really want some Chicken McNuggets. Maybe I'll feel different by the time his "Hall of Fame" album drops sometime before "Detox".

In the meantime, enjoy...
