Heems’ “Nehru Jackets” Mixtape is Either Hipster Wackness or Pure Dopeness (Listen & Download)

There's no one I have more of a love/hate relationship with than Das Racist. I have moments when I think they're the best thing to happen to hip-hop since Rosa Acosta, and moments when they make me want to punch a kitten in the face, and Das Racist frontman Heems' new "Nehru Jackets" mixtape is only complicating things.

Here's the pros and cons. Con: Heems often slips into that "crazy" flow where he just rhymes the first few words he can think of, then throws in an obscure pop culture reference. For example, is the following an actual Heems line, or just something I made up in literally fifteen seconds?

"I don't give four fucks, Peking duck, she suck suck, guarding the net like Goldberg in Mighty Ducks."

I made it up, but the point is it really shouldn't be that hard to tell. Couple that with a hipster-esque "we're cooler than you, and we're going to prove it by mocking everything you take seriously" attitude and you've got Nathan S. on a kitten-punching spree.

On the other hand.....Heems raps about shit absolutely no one else is rapping about, much of it far more serious material than it would appear at first, and that's exactly the type of shit we need more of. Plus, he can be legitimately hilarious. Come on, you have to give it up for a group that drops videos like "Michael Jackson".
