Who Else Thinks This Das Racist “Sit Down Man” Mixtape is Wack? (Listen, Download & Vote!)

Das Racist Sit Down, Man Mixtape Cover
I know some of my colleagues over at the mothership may not be pleased with this post, but I've always had problems holding my tongue. Today Das Racist's new project "Sit Down, Man" dropped and people are motherloving loving it, just downloading in droves, leaving me wondering what all the fuss is about.

For me, Das Racist is everything I don't like about hipsters concentrated into audio form. They're self-consciously ironic, play the "I'm cooler than you because I don't care about being cool' card over and over again and, most importantly, they can't rap. I'm all for bizzare rhymes (come check out my MF DOOM catalog sometime) but there's a difference between left-of-center and just making up some gibberish. These are actual lyrics from their record "Puero Rican Cousins" (listen below): "Got more rhymes than Jay Elec got rama lama ding dong parmesan cheese on the ravioli." Awesome. More of that please. If a mixtape could grow an ironic mustache and spend all afternoon watching "CHiPs" reruns and eating expensive sushi, this mixtape would be doing it. God I hate hipsters.

But maybe I'm alone on this one, so I'm opening up the polls to RefinedHype nation. Have at it:

This isn't rap this is random mumbling with a beat. In all honesty I never thought a word like rama lama could be used. In fact wtf is rama lama?

"rama lama ding dong"

Look up "Deceptacon" by Le Tigre. From what I can tell, Das Racist's lyrics are pretty much just dense blocks of references to random shit. Most lyrics these days are just copypasta anyway.

Brilliant, you nailed it. And if the poll is any indication, the overwhelming response has been "who the hell is Das Racist", so I almost feel a little bad introducing so many people to their music. My bad. Sorry people.

first I have heard of this guy... and hopefully the last.

On a side note, I always called director M. Night Shamalam, "M. Night Shamalam-a-ding-dong" so much so that my wife thoung his name really was "M. Night Shamalam-a-ding-dong!!"

For the record, Das Racist is a group, not just one guy.

the rama lama ding dong nonsense is a reference to jay electronica and his lack of rhymes. . .whoooosh (that's the sound of their humor going over your head).

That's racist. sit down, man.

"I'm intelligence in the age of the internet/where you're as smart as how quickly you can use your smart phone/ i'm complex."
-this is why people who don't really get das racist never really will. It's not about being ironic, it's about being critical, with humor. And if you think this only appeals to rich white hipsters, you didn't see how crazy mexico went for these guys a mtymx.

Nathan S.... sit down man
Madlib.... sit down man

Das Racist is more intelligent than you can ever fathom. and if it's the real madlib posting nonsense, you should really sit down. all your medicine show shit sucks and you can't rap work a fuck either. also, das rasict puts their shit out for free and gets more publicity everyday for it, while you mix a bunch of old vinyl into a slopppy clusterfuck, sell it for $13.99, and call it a work of art. sit down man

First of all, I'm about to show you some lyrics so that this isn't one-sided. You happened to pick the goofiest lyrics they have (or close to it) and based your whole argument off that.

I will first build upon what an earlier user said. They reference shit nonstop. That's not a bad thing, but actually a really interesting addition to their raps. You don't see most rappers referencing the verbal masterpiece of Ernest Hemmingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls, or the genius behind In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, Jeff Magnum, let alone do you see both in the same song (and pipe down all you trolls who don't like Neutral Milk Hotel. Whether or not you enjoy it, it is one of the most critically acclaimed album of all time, at least respect that).

https://www.mdl4.com/2010/10/das-racist-rainbow-in-the-dark-lyrics-meaning/

Here is a link to that song btw, along with the lyrics and all of the references. And being funny does not automatically equal being "hipster" and neither of the two are bad. Half the people who use the word pretentious don't even know what it means, and because these guys are goofy, funny, and having a good time, apparently they must be "ironic" and horrible people.

congrats
das racist are the shit.
"Wait. Are you able to give of the flesh like Abel do? Not able? Cain'll do." witty as hell
"I'm cliche, I feel as high as a rooftop / Contradict myself in raps like 2Pac" funny as hell
"Shorty said I look like a chubby Jake Gyllenhall; I said this ain’t brokeback, and I’m a broke mack, I’m so hard that I’m typing on a broke Mac” witty and funny as hell
"second best rapper with glasses after E-40" how can you not love it
"Catch me drinking lean in Italy like I was Pisa, we can eat the flyest cave aged cheese, for sheeze, ma" how???

Posted on Jan 05, 2011
congrats
as for the beats... "over dance music that would serve to undermine it so Talib Kweli fans wouldn't like it"

hipsters hate hipsters more than anyone else hates hipsters.. it's a fact. and what's so wrong with being a hipster? as long as they are not super passive aggressive i don't mind em.

Lol it's funny how this whole poll was turned upside down since the 15th. Go listen to Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell and tell me it's not Anthony Bourdain approved.

"It’s impossible to form an opinion on this either way that doesn’t paint you as droolingly moronic or scoff-inducingly smug. Is this pap insipid? No doubt, but (importantly!) winkingly so. Thus: deride away, but know that to accuse “Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell” of vacuity would be to accuse the Baconator™ of lacking nutritional content. "
– Coke Machine Glow

ps: don't label bubba/ try and understand more of there lyrics --> take another look at the polls --> ps: hipster is a huge ass label in which they don't really fit wink

i think Nathan S. is lost in the sauce.

A) this is NOT a mix tape. (based on the current def. of a mix tape which has changed since it's original meaning of a mix made by a dj, to it's current meaning of mc's stealing a pop beat and putting their own rhymes on it). all of Das Racist's music is original from what i have heard.

B) EVERY mc i have played Das Racist too fell in love with them from the jump. and these are people whom actually listen to lyrics and try to interpret the true meaning off them. if you had a hard time catching their metaphors Nathan S., then you should take a second to actually listen to them before you post an ignorant thread that only quotes a single line from their more extravagant and comedic songs.
C) calling them hipsters because they have a comical, cynical, and sarcastic rhyme scheme, only serves to prove that you are brain washed by the pop media on what hiphop is or should be. every rap group doesn't have to play the "gansta" or "i'm the illest lyricist" role. it's ok to have fun making music while putting out your point of view on the world. you need to broaden your perspective and accept the fact that rappers don't have to fit into a predetermined model. people like you is why it became trendy to claim that hiphop is dead simply because hipPOP has blown up in the market.

so no Nathan S., please don't sit down. stand up, wake up, and let be. or kick rocks!

I like Shut Up, Dude way better than Sit Down, Man. That being said, the two albums are definitely different. Check out their second album before you close the book on these guys for good.
