Who the F*ck is The Weeknd?

Posted by Nathan S. on 04/11/11 | Filed under Top Stories, Downloads, Features, The Weeknd, Who the Fuck Is
Over the last few weeks those of us who frequent the musical corners of the interwebs have been seeing the name The Weeknd pop up time and time again. Others, in fact most people, have still never even heard the name. Either way everyone has the same question: who the f*ck is The Weeknd?

Who?

By all accounts The Weeknd is actually one dude, Abel Tesfaye, a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from Toronto. However....he also regularly works with two other producers. Whether or not those two other dudes actually comprise Weeknd, thereby making them a three person band, is a bit of a mystery. Basically it's kind of like a Jay Electronica situation; in an era when we know everything about everyone instantly, an artist surrounded in any mystery, no matter how mundane, is suddenly fascinating.

Why does anyone care?

Because he/they got a major co-sign; why does anyone care about anything these days? (That last sentence was dripping with sarcasm, by the way.) Drake started Tweeting lyrics off his/their new mixtape, "House of Balloons", and that's pretty much all it takes to throw the interwebs into a frenzy these days.

On that note, one listen and it's clear why Drake likes him/them. He/they sound exactly like what Drake wants to sound like when he's on his r&b shit, only if Drizzy could actually sing really well.

Is the music any good?

Well, it depends. (How's that for a complete cop out answer?) Of course he/they aren't nearly as good as all the hype would suggest, but that's not really his/their fault. He/they didn't push for all this hype, it kind of came to him/them.

If you dig trippy, spacey R&B/pop/etc. there's a good chance you'll like them. If not, don't even bother. Either way I'm sure Drake will do a track with him/them soon, at which point he/they will be impossible to ignore, so at least now you know what everyone's talking about.

Couple videos, one of which is pretty NSFWish, and a download link to their "House of Balloons" mixtape are below for those who find themselves intrigued.
