Bullshit Numbers (The Lil Kim Edition)

Just an hour after I finally picked myself up off the floor from that Yung Berg fiasco I started getting emails from my hip-hop brethren with subject lines like: “Lil Kim Mixtape 100K Downloads???”. Serenity now. Serenity now.

Quick rewind. Yesterday Lil Kim - you know, that woman whose last album came out six years ago - dropped a “Black Friday” mixtape that she claimed 110,000 people bought on the first day. God, where do I start?

First, Eminem’s “Recovery”, the most popular hip-hop album of the year. sold 750,000 copies in it’s first week. Do the math (110k x 7 days) and that means Kim’s mixtape will almost match Eminem’s album. On a scale of 1-10 on my bullshit meter, that’s a 492.

And where, pray tell, is that ridiculously inflated number coming from? Why via her PayPal account, of course. Yeah, that’s right. The project was released through motherfucking PAYPAL!!!, with Kim’s team promising to mail a physical copy of the mixtape to any buyer.

All this means that either Kim’s psychotically delusional at this point (which, frankly, is in play) or thinks we all have the collective intelligence of Brian Pumper. Either way, I kind of want to ether myself right now.
