It's no secret around these parts that I take any list put together by XXL about as seriously as I take my one-year-old daughter's scribblings, but I have to hand it to them, they know how to get people talking. It'd be impossible to put together a list like the 250 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of the '90s and not stoke some debate, but thanks to MTV's journalistic research XXL leaking the list to MTV for promo, we can jump straight to the top and start arguing about their number one choice: Dr. Dre's "Nothin' But a G Thang."
The full list hits newstands on May 14, but since I don't know a single person who still buys magazines from newsstands, let's just wait until someone inevitably posts it all online. In the meantime, does "Nothin' But a G Thang" deserve to be number one? I'll have to mull it over, but I'm not initially angry. That song set off the entire gangsta rap movement - not only is it legitimately dope but it had enormous influence. Hmmmm......thoughts from RefinedHype Nation?
