Trend Watch: Give Me My Snapback Back

Posted by Adeshola Adigun on 09/08/11 | Filed under Top Stories, Features, Trend Watch

In case you ain't heard, snapbacks back! But some artists wear their caps so much that when you see them without one you realize how fucking odd they can look.

Let's take Tyler, The Creator for example. He's made his music personality almost synonymous with green caps, especially Supreme ones. I don't even think I've seen him without one on, but then the other day I came across this old yearbook photo of his that damn-near had me doubled over.

Wiz Khalifa rocks a good amount of snapbacks too. Since he's grown out his hair you see a good amount of photos and video clips of him sans the hats with just his hair poofed out. But have you ever seen how he looked without something covering his short hair some years back? Pretty funny if you ask me.

Big Sean rocks caps like it's nobody's business. The only time you'll probably see him without one on is when he's all suited up on his Rosewood shit. That makes him a great candidate for this topic. Google some images of him without a hat on and you might strike gold. I was watching the MTV “When I Was 17” episode with him, Tyler, The Creator and Kreayshawn and surely enough, most photos of him without a cap on are...laughable. Here's one I found in a Google search.

Hip-hop artists with a longer track record is victims too. Before snapbacks was back we was all rocking fitted caps like it was nobody's business. Lloyd Banks and Cassidy were two of my favorite rappers for most of high school. I remember seeing some piece in XXL back then that had me dying. The piece was about rappers who look weird without fitteds on and surely enough Lloyd Banks and Cassidy were of the five or so artist that looked like martians. If you're familiar enough with how these dudes look then you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Aight, I'm trippin'. In reality, when you get used to seeing someone a particular way you're obviously gonna get thrown off when they switch it up on you. Think about how awkward it was a few years back when Busta Rhymes cut his hair after more than a decade of long hair. Shit looked clean but I was like, what the fuck?! Thought I was in a parallel universe or some shit.

Anyway, the moral of the story is - be it snapback or fitted or whatever - try to find a balance of how often you switch up your appearance so people like me won't have a laugh and a half at your expense. Unless of course you're into that shit.

*The only reason why I was able to write this is because I'm often a victim of it myself. Maybe it's self-loathing.
