RefinedHype Quiz: How Well Do You Know Your Samples?

Posted by Lucas G. on 01/08/14 | Filed under Rap Quiz, Samples

Since the Kanye West Or Crazy Person quiz, we have been trying our best to give you funny, yet head-scratching brain-teasers and I'd say we did a pretty good job (Drake or The Notebook anyone). Well, the main goal of those quizzes was to make you laugh more than anything, but now all the fun and games are over. Any average Joe can decipher a Dr. Seuss line among some 2 Chainz bars, but this next quiz here takes some real hip-hop knowledge. It's time to really put on those thinking caps people, get ready for the first ever, RefinedHype Sample quiz.

Sampling is as integral to hip-hop as Jordan's and cartoon character chains...okay so its definitely much more integral but you get the idea. below you will find 12 songs, your job is to figure out which hip-hop song sampled them. Since some samples have been used more than once, I tried my best to make the answer the most famous example. Still, there are a few extra credit answer's but if that isn't good enough, feel free to give yourself a point for each one you can name. When thinking of the answer though, try to think about which song really owned the sample. I didn't take some random drum break, I chose some pretty big samples so you shouIdn't have too much trouble. If you wanna cheat, go ahead, but after you should seriously take a long look at yourself. If cheating on an hip-hop blog quiz is something you need to do, I feel bad for you; congratulations on winning absolutely nothing. For the rest of you sane hip-hop students, best of luck!

So are you J.Dilla or J.Kwon? How many did you get? I tried to make it pretty straightforward and use recognizable samples so the odds are tilted in your favor. I can't fault for not knowing if a fancy food comes Action Bronson or a restaurant but I can fault you for not knowing some of these classic samples. Looking for a sample or playing "who sampled it on your own" is a really fun game and it not only helps you expand your musical horizons, but it trains your ear. You would be amazed at the samples you come across when you really listen, and who knows you might improve your score next round (although I plan on making them significantly harder. Keep studying!
