Lupe Fiasco’s “Peace of Paper/Cup of Jayzus”: Weird Name, Great Song Posted by Lucas Garrison on 09/12/13 | Filed under Lupe Fiasco

I have been pretty hard on Lupe Fiasco these past few months. He has always been eccentric, but his behavior these past few months had me worried he might have gone off the deep end. He still might have but his music has not suffered. Lupe wowed me with "SLR 3" and now with his highly anticipated, highly mysterious "Peace Of Paper/Cup Of Jayzus" he has me believing in him again. With the way he announced this effort, nobody really knew what it was or what he had planned. Well as it turns out it is nothing more than a promo single…a phenomenal one at that.

“SLR 3 (Round Of Applause)” was my favorite Lupe song of the past few years…until I heard this one. "Peace Of Paper/Cup Of Jayzus" is on another level. I really didn’t know what to expect with cryptic announcement, but am pleasantly surprised. When Lupe is on is on the top of his game, as he is on this cut, there are few that can touch him. His lyricism is unrivaled he leaves us so much to unpack. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a Lupe song this much. 

Part of why I always loved Lupe is the fact that you could listen to a song a million times and each listen you would catch something new he said that you hadn’t heard before. It has been a minute sense he has had that effect on me, but he nailed it here. I can't get over the section where he lists what rappers have been dubbed the best by other emcees starting with my favorite line, “Bumped into Doom the greatest rappers collide”. For all his craziness, it’s nice to know he hasn’t lost a step on the mic; he had me worried there for a minute. He can be as crazy on Twitter as he wants as long as he keeps making music like this.
