There are literally hundreds of artists from the late 90’s and early 00’s that we might never hear from again. I recently created a playlist that has some of these artists on it and one of my favorite cuts on the small but growing play list is “Still Tippin’” from Mike Jones. But it’s not your average “Still Tippin’”, this version is a remix/mashup with “It’s A Man’s World” from Nicole Wray.



I never got why Wray faded, she absolutely destroys the song and her chops were more powerful than your average turn-of-the-century crooner. She did a few songs with Blackroc (The Black Keys’ experimental hip-hop group) but other than her work has been non-existent and for someone who was once signed to Roc-a-fella, it’s amazing she didn’t make more of an impact; she didn’t even release an album. Well, I am happy to report Ms. Wray is making a comeback; only she isn’t doing it alone. Wray has hooked up with Terri Walker (who, like Wray, worked with Dame Dash) to form the powerhouse soul, doo-wop duo Lady.



Impressive right? The two have a natural chemistry and really work well together. The instrumentals are awesome too; great blend of old-school soul with just a dash of hip-hop. Believe it or not, it gets even better than the video single; the more I listen to of these ladies, the more I love. While all their stuff is stellra the songs below stick out to me. “Tell The Truth” sounds straight outta the 70’s; ghey have that vintage spark and soul that is so hard to recapture. The vibe on “Good Lovin” is incredible; it is edgy, but still has a subtle smoothness to it thanks to their interwoven vocals.





The beats and instrumentals are top notch too. Although they are all very diverse, each one is intoxicating. The whole time I was listening to them I was bobbing my head and tapping my foot right along with it; every cut from start to finish. “Karma” was my favorite instrumental mainly for the outro featuring a dope guitar solo.



Lady dropped an album in March which was criminally overlooked. I haven’t listened to the whole thing, but I have yet to hear a song I don’t love. I don’t buy albums often, but I am seriously considering picking up the self-titled album. Welcome back Nicole!
