Lupe Fiasco Pays Tribute To Jonylah Watkins On The Moving “Jonylah Forever” (Listen)

Posted by Danielle Harling on 03/15/13 | Filed under Lupe Fiasco

It's no secret that the city of Chicago has struggled heavily with violence over the last year and this past week the violence in the city claimed one of its youngest victims yet, six-month-old Jonylah Watkins. In honor of Watkins' memory, Lupe Fiasco released "Jonylah Forever" earlier today and included this moving message along with the song: "She lives as long as we do. She will live forever. God bless your soul and the family you left behind. We Love You."

With the backing of a somber, boom-bappish beat, Lupe goes on to rap about what could have been on "Jonylah Forever" as he spits, "At 16 is when you got your scholarship/ At 22 is when you got your Doctorate." Lupe's vivid storytelling paired with the tragedy that inspired "Jonylah Forever" makes for one very moving record and a very powerful number from the Chi-Town rapper.
