I won't lie, I've been known to fire some shots in Lil Wayne's direction, mostly because, to be fair, he makes himself such an easy and big target. But as I think people collectively realized when Weezy suffered his first round of highly publicized seizures, as frustrating as he can be, hip-hop's more interesting with him in it, and I certainly don't wish any personal harm on the man.

So maybe that's why this Katie Couric interview (because Lil Wayne x Katie Couric interviews are a thing that happen in real life) really made me feel for the man. For just a moment he wasn't the Trukfit outfitted, rapping about menstrual cycles obsessed rapper, he was (despite his claims) a real human being.

"I know I'll be ready to retire at 35 because I am so ready to retire now!" That might just be the realest thing that's ever come out of Lil Wayne's mouth.

So allow me a moment of sincerity. Hey Lil Wayne, retire. Now. Please. I'm not saying that as a hip-hop fan, and I'm not saying that to Lil Wayne the rapper, I'm saying it to Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. (if there's any difference between the two anymore). You've accomplished everything you could possibly hope to accomplish. You've made enough money to set up your grandchildren's children for life. You've made superstars out of the next generation of rappers.

Judging by your music and that quote, your heart's not really in music anymore, and who could blame you? You've been at this since you were a teenager, and we've seen the toll that kind of lifetime in the public glare takes on musicians and actors alike. 

What are you waiting for? For your health to get even worse? You've got your children, and as a fellow father it legitimately saddens me to think of your children losing their dad because he was chasing rap dollars. You've got your legacy in rap more than secured. Walk away now, while you still can. As much as I like cracking jokes about you, I despise the idea of you becoming the next Big Pun even more. Hip-hop already has too many of those stories. Let your legacy be the first superstar rapper to walk away from the game before it truly killed him.
