While the interwebs have enabled me to hear more music from more artists than was even conceivable pre-2000, it's also allowed more artists to bombard me with more music than I could conceivably ever listen to. I have no doubt that every day I miss dope shit in my inbox simply because, you know, I have to eat/occasionally sleep/keep my daughter off the pole etc. and not spend literally every waking minute listening to rap.
So I came up with an idea, an idea to ensure that I would at least occasionally be able to stumble across some dope new shit that probably would have flown by my inbox: Twitter Listening Sessions. It's a simple idea: every so often I'll put out throw the #TwitterListeningSession beacon up on Twitter. The first artist to respond gets my undivided attention and, if they're not Mixxie, a post. First up:
And just like that I was listening to GM's "#GMEP" album. I won't front, my expectations were low; they're low for any rapper I've never really listened to before. But thank sweet baby jesus not only was #GMEP not balls, it was actually....pretty dope. That no holds barred NYC street rap is an endangered species these days, but GM's unapologetic style demands respect.
Even more impressively, when I told him I was digging the project and wanted to write about it, he threw together an exclusive video for "#GMEP" stand out track "#IAintShit" on some real indie rap, grab my peoples - in this case TreeShurts- and a camera and shoot/direct/edit it myself type shit.
I don't expect future #TwitterListeningSessions to go this well, but respect to GM for making the inaugural edition so dope. A link to "#GMEP", along with a preview, is below the "#IAintShit" video below. Enjoy:
