What Are Your Favorite Songs (Right Now) From Drake’s “Nothing Was The Same”?

Posted by Lucas G. on 09/17/13 | Filed under Opinion, Debates, Drake

Now that it has been a full 24 hours since "Nothing Was The Same" dropped its about time we all starting rushing to judgment and jumping to conclusions; after all, one day on the internet is like a month in real life. Just kidding, there won’t be any broad, overreaching statements about this album here (especially because I spent all of last night playing "GTA" instead of listening), but a simple "favorite songs so far" will do just fine.

Whenever I listen to a new album, I usually give it a quick listen through then, more often than not, I find myself playing a few choice cuts on repeat before I go back again and really delve into the album. Usually those initial songs I liked remain my favorites, but every so often, after more listens, I come to like a different cut. I only say this because this list is my initial favorites and is subject to change; obviously it’s to early to crown any "Nothing Was The Same" songs the “best”, so keep in mind these are only my favorites so far. While we can’t speak in finalities now, there is no harm in talking about our favorite songs right?

“The Motion"

This song is the epitome of a guilty pleasure. Everything tells me I shouldn’t like this song—it’s poppy, catchy, and, lyrically, is a stereotypical Drake cut—but I can’t stop listening. Maybe it is Sampha’s unique, atmospheric vocals that draw me in, but for the life of me I can’t explain why I love this cut as much as I do. The beat has an interesting sample, but it is nothing mind-blowing. As for Drake, the average lyrics are saved by his delivery and cadence and I like how his quicker flow is contrasted with his slower, R&B style. I don’t know if this will last as a favorite, but right now “The Motion” is easily my favorite song. iTunes says I have played it 15 times and the next closest song has 5 plays; that doesn’t include listens on my phone either. You can act as tough as you want and say you didn’t like this song, but real men admit the like “The Motion”.  Five months from now I can see myself playing a few other songs more, but as of now, this is my favorite.

“Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2”

The formula here is simple…any song+Jay Z = 5 times better; call it the Hov-agorean theory. Jay Z makes me love this song, but rest assured his verse isn’t the only thing that stands out. As I said yesterday this beat is one of my favorites; it is simple yet effective. That Wu-Tang chop gets me every time and love the mood on "Paris Morton". I thought I would leave this cut remembering Jay-Z but Drake kept up with him; especially on the “Paris Morton” section. Unlike “The Motion” I think this song is sure to stay in my favorites list; it is a more substantive, rich listening experience.

“From Time”

I was torn between this song and “Hold On, We're Going Home”, but in the end Jhene Aiko’s vocals tilted the scales. Jhene and Drake have a undeniable chemistry and the fit seems so natural. Drake could have handled the chorus and nobody would have bat an eye, but Aiko’s hookwork gives it something special. This one is simple yet effective and I think a lot of the credit goes to Aiko’s fantastic vocals. When the song started, I was expecting Drake’s R&B style to run rampant and I was pleasantly surprised when he stuck to rapping. This is another relationship ballad from Drake but the hip-hop package it comes it makes it more significant, and appealing than his usual love ballad.

Every cut on "Nothing Was The Same" might not be a winner, but I think the strength is in its diversity. From the die-hard hip-hop head to the screaming 16-year-old girls, there is something for everyone. We poke fun at Drake a lot, but when it comes down to the music, he is no joke. Drake is one of the more diverse emcees out there today and while you may not like the lane he is in, you can’t deny he does it better than anyone.
