Affordable Luxury: Converse x Maison Martin Margiela First String

Posted by Ru Porter on 09/09/13 | Filed under Style, Sneakers, Converse

Sometimes a simple, clean look is all you need to be fashionable. Loud colors and bold patterns aren’t always needed to make a statement, but even the most ordinary items could benefit from a few subtle updates; and I’d imagine that’s what Converse and Maison Martin Margiela had in mind for their first-ever hand-painted canvas collaboration.

The Converse x Maison Martin Margiela First String is a limited-edition series featuring two of the former’s signature models -- Converse’s Chuck Taylor All Star Hi and Jack Purcell – in the latter’s iconic white hue. The styles are available in four different versions based on heritage colors from the Converse archives: red, black, navy, and Margiela-exclusive vintage yellow, lined in premium off-white leather, which embody each brand’s spirit of individuality and self-expression unifying Converse and Margiela’s conviction of unleashing creativity, according to it’s designers.

Simplicity aside, what’s likeable about the Converse x Maison Martin Margiela First String is the ability to blend high-end fashion with casual streetwear. Margiela’s sneakers usually cost $500 plus for a pair, so the decision to make one of his shoes attainable for the average sneakerhead at $200, gets honorable mention from me. Every real sneakerhead should own at least one pair of European shoes, but the cost of premium materials from overseas can leave huge holes in your pockets. Thankfully, these particular pairs don’t.
