If I had a nickel for every Bruno Mars song I have heard you would have one and a half nickels. No disrespect to Bruno, but his bubblegum pop style just isn’t my thing. There isn’t anything wrong with pop cuts, but for the most part, they all feel relatively factory made and contain little thought or substance. Are they catchy? Hell yeah, but in order for a pop cut (or any cut for that matter) to get my attention, there has to be some sort of depth, thought, or even a concept behind it and rarely do radio friendly song have one, let alone all three.

To my surprise, Bruno Mars’ latest video single, "Treasure", is actually pretty damn good. It’s not just a catchy jingle, but a well done throwback; I don't mind having this stuck in my head.



Don’t get me wrong, its still catchy and poppy, but the retro sound gives it a different, original feel. With funky a** bass line and a touch of synth, it almost sounds like an instrumental from the great Stevie Wonder or Earth Wind & Fire. Mars’ vocals are dope too. They are fluffly, but still have a certain power to them that makes this song really pop. I know its not exactly a retro cut, but I get the same kind of intoxicatingly upbeat feeling I get when I listen to a throwback cut. The video is great too. I love the blurry, fuzzy effects that take the old-schoolness to another level.

The big music videos these days are all about big budgets, high-production value, and a ton of bells and whistles so its nice to see someone get away from that. While you might not admit it to your friends, I have no doubt you will dig this too. If only more pop songs were like "Treasure" and less like this.
